8 Surprising Ways Pets Can Sense Things That You Can’t

Pets have amazing abilities that we can never fully understand. They can even sense things like diseases, human emotions and changes in the weather. It is these instincts that make them aware of their environment. In this list, we will focus on eight ways pets know things humans just cannot.

Sensing Illness

Most pets – especially dogs – can smell quite well. They are able to detect small changes in a person’s body that could be a sign of illness. Dogs have even been known to sniff cancer, diabetes or infections on a human body. Their noses can pick up on the biochemical shifts occurring within a body — changes that humans are unable to sense in any way.

Detecting Seizures

Pets, especially dogs, are sometimes known to have the ability to tell their owner when he is about to have a fit. This can happen minutes, or sometimes hours before the seizure begins. They can detect differences in their owner’s behavior, smell, or body language. Many owners claim their dogs appear to be restless or get very anxious shortly before seizure, as if they are trying to warn them.

Picking Up Emotions

Many pets – like cats and dogs – can read human emotions. They can sense when you are upset, anxious or happy without saying a single word. They know how to pick up on subtle shifts in body language, facial expression or inflection of voice. This is also why pets tend to come to us when we are feeling down (and offer a nudge or cuddle when we are feeling upset).

Hearing High-Frequency Sounds

Pets have better hearing abilities than we do. They can even hear sounds that are so high in frequency we cannot detect them with our own ears. For instance – they can hear dog whistles or the hum of electronics long before we catch wind of anything. With this high-range hearing, they are better aware of events occurring around them (even when silent to us).

Feeling Earthquakes

Some people have noticed their pets behaving abnormally just before an earthquake. Dogs, cats and other animals can actually detect the weaker tremors that humans don’t notice. Some of them have been found to bark, walk & even hide before the quake hits. This is a part of their natural instincts to keep them safe.

Sensing Changes in Weather

Climate changes can affect pets very easily. They sense changes in the atmospheric pressure or humidity that typically come before a storm or unsettled weather. Dogs and cats may become nervous, hide or act restless when they feel a storm coming.

Smelling Hormonal Changes

Some pets, dogs especially, pick up on your hormonal changes as well. This is why a lot of dogs turn more protective when their owner is pregnant. They will probably just stick closer to their owner during this time. Some dogs even become gentler or nurturing when they recognize these changes.

Sensing Danger

Pets have this great instinct when detecting danger. They can feel when someone or something is unsafe. For example, a pet dog may growl or start barking at someone that they can feel is suspicious. Pets are also known to react quickly to dangerous situations – like fires or break-ins.
