10 ways people show dislike without words

Not everyone will come out and say, “I don’t like you,” and frankly, most people never will. However, that does not mean they won’t hint at it through various signs. This could come in a multitude of forms through body language, tone, or simply silence. There are sneaky little ways when it comes to letting someone know you do not care for them without saying a single word. Here are 10 ways people could be subtly giving you a sign they do not like you.

Avoiding eye contact

They refuse to make eye contact and look around at anything that is not you. It is a way of showing “I do not want to be here with you” without verbalizing it.

Forced or fake smiles

You know that smile that looks polite and forced. You can sense that it does not reach their eyes and it is just a mechanical expression to keep it cordial. But it feels cold and awkward.

Closed body language

Crossing their arms, shifting their body away from you, or turning at a slight angle from you are signs of closed body language. The changing of body position is a great way to say, “I am not open to this conversation right now.”

One-word answers

Every answer is a monosyllabic response of “fine,” “sure,” or “okay” with a completely lifeless and void tone. They’re keeping it short to end the interaction quickly.

Delayed or no replies to messages

They always take forever to respond or they don’t reply at all. That silence says a lot more than words ever could.

Lack of interest in your life

They never ask questions, follow up, or lean in when you are talking.  People who care about you will always ask questions about you.

Avoiding physical proximity

They sit far away from you, pull away when giving you a hug, or physically back away from you during a conversation. People naturally create distance from others when they feel uneasy or disinterested.

Eye-rolling or long sighs

They express their discontent by rolling their eyes or making exaggerated sighs as if you were their worst nightmare. Words are not needed; they’re speaking loud and clear with their face.

Ignoring you in group settings

They acknowledge everyone else but barely look your way. This is a subtle social freeze-out, showing their dislike towards you.

Lack of basic politeness

They leave out social pleasantries like “please,” “thank you,” or even a smile. When someone drops the usual niceties, it can be their quiet way of saying they don’t really like you.
