We have a new & incredible life made with the latest technologies, but it’s not always for the better. And while it seems like a convenience, I get frustrated by its problems. From endless push notifications to struggling with repairing smart home devices — wasn’t life simpler before everything became ‘smart’?
If you’ve ever been there, here are 12 ways today’s technology is not making your life easier:

Endless Notifications

Each ding, buzz, or pop-up distracts me from what I’m doing. Even when I turn my gadgets off, there’s a constant fear of missing an alert. Far from making tasks easier, notifications have made multitasking an endless fight for focus.
Too Many Passwords

Password management is a headache. With each new app or site asking for a unique password, it’s hard to keep up. And, despite a password manager – I have been locked out of accounts because I forgot master passwords or entered them incorrectly on another device. What was supposed to improve security ends up being yet another burden.

Overcomplicated Devices

When I got a smart thermostat, I thought it would make my life simpler. Instead, it took hours to install, connect to Wi-Fi & figure out the app. And when the internet goes down? Forget about adjusting the temperature.
Social Media Stress

The endless scrolling through social media is a trap. On one hand, it’s good to connect with friends; on the other, it’s exhausting to view filtered versions of everyone’s life. Stress from the need to keep up appearances or stay relevant can lead to feelings of inadequacy & fatigue.
Unending Work Hours

Prior to smartphones, turning off at the end of the day really did count. Now, emails, Slack messages, project updates are everywhere. You can’t go away because work is all around you & even “off” hours are filled with the expectation to stay available. These tangled-up working-and-life relationships can soon lead to burnout.
Information Overload

The internet has answers to everything & there’s too much information to handle. I’ve poured hours into a review of a single product, or two articles contradictory about the same condition. Even the most simple decisions are overwhelmed by the volume of data.
Privacy Concerns

The more connected we are, the more impossible it is to maintain privacy. The constant tracking by apps, websites & devices is seriously frightening. Even taking steps to secure personal data feels like a never-ending task.
Tech Glitches & Downtime

Do you ever want to get something done & your computer crashes or your Wi-Fi stops working? I’ve been there & it’s just really bad. And when a five-minute task turns into a two-hour marathon with glitches, frozen screens or errors – I doubt the very tech that I use.
Environmental Impact

Year after year, new phones, laptops & electronics send old ones to the dump. I’ve tried to recycle or repair old devices, but companies often make it difficult with proprietary parts & pricey repairs. It’s upsetting to see how deliberately planned obsolescence harms our wallets & the world.
Increased Isolation

Even with all these ways of connecting on the internet, I’ve seen less & less in-person interaction. Most of us, myself included, are looking at screens at the table or at a party. Technology is ironic because although it bridges our online gulf, in the real world we’re separated & a lot of relationships are superficial.
Health Issues

When I sit for hours, my eyes hurt or my neck stiffens from staring at screens. And I find it yanks my sleep when I glance at my phone in the night. Over time, technology’s impact on our health—from screen strain to inactivity—has become clearer & harder to overlook.
Subscription Fatigue

Every device or app seems to require a subscription now. TV subscriptions, cloud storage, meditation apps, news apps, music app, grocery delivery, food delivery, shopping apps — all of this is charged every month. This makes it a whole lot harder to budget now because you have to keep track of renewals & fees.
