We all follow a bunch of social rules yet nobody ever taught us them explicitly. Elevator Etiquette
Elevator Etiquette 101 involves holding the ‘open door’ button till everyone is in & making room for everyone else who comes in after you. After all, nobody wants to be that person squishing everyone else because they decided to stand right in front of the door. Pushing to the back makes sure that everyone fits—and we still have some personal space.
The Art of Personal Space
Speaking of personal space, we have an unspoken rule about keeping your distance in public places. If there are free seats on a bus or train, you don’t sit down right next to someone if you don’t have to. Why? Because we want to give each other a bit of breathing room. Nobody wants to feel like they’re being crowded and especially when there’s plenty of space to spread out.

Listen More, Talk Less
Being in a conversation where someone won’t stop talking about themselves is never fun. That’s why we have an unwritten rule that sharing is important but it’s equally important to listen so everyone can throw in their two cents. This way, conversations feel more like a tennis match & less like a solo performance.
The Quick Nod
Have you ever noticed that we tend to give a quick nod or smile when we accidentally make eye contact with a stranger? Essentially, we’re telling them that we see them there without having to actually say anything. It’s a tiny gesture that helps us acknowledge each other’s existence in a polite way.
Seat Giving 101
On a crowded bus or train, offering your seat to someone who needs it more than you do is basic manners. It doesn’t matter if it’s an elderly person or a pregnant woman—showing a little kindness can make anyone’s day. Unfortunately, not everyone follows this rule even though we all know about it.
Door Holding Decency
It doesn’t matter if you’re in a hurry because you probably hold a door for the person behind you. It’s like an unspoken pact among humans! Taking those extra two seconds to hold a door can make someone’s day a bit easier yet we get nothing in return for doing so. Really, this is the most unselfish act you can do.
Sidewalk Rules
Walking on the right and passing on the left is pretty much the unspoken rule of sidewalks, at least in America. Following these rules helps everything to run as it should & also means we can avoid that awkward sidewalk dance. You know the one—when you and the person coming towards you can’t figure out which way to go.
Quiet Zone Respect
As soon as you enter a library or a quiet coffee shop, you automatically lower your voice. We have a volume dial in our heads that automatically turns down when we enter these quiet zones to respect the place’s vibe. After all, we want to make sure that everyone can enjoy the sound of silence.
Clean Up Your Mess
Whether it’s at a friend’s house or a public picnic area, you have to clean up after yourself. You’re saying “thank you” to the universe for letting you use the space as well as to the people who work there. Plus, nobody wants to be the person who leaves a huge trail of chaos behind them.
Queueing Like a Pro
Waiting your turn in line without making a fuss is one of those things we all just do and cutting in line is one of the largest social mistakes you can make. Such a rule centers on fairness & patience—two things that make waiting in line a little less painful for everyone else. So wait your turn!
Boundary Respect
Knowing when to back off & give someone their space is rather important because it means we can read the room. It shows we understand that not everyone wants to share their life story or have you in their personal bubble—and that’s okay. We know that respecting boundaries is the best way to be.
The Exit Strategy
When you’re visiting someone, you likely know when it’s time to head out as you don’t want to overstay your welcome. If you do, it’ll turn even the nicest of visits into a marathon session! You have to read the signs & understand that all good things, including visits, have to come to an end.
Complimenting Like You Mean It
Giving genuine compliments is one of the nicest things you can do yet there’s no social rule for when & how we should do this. It’s not because you’re expecting anything in return—you’re simply trying to make someone else feel good. And who doesn’t love making someone’s day a little brighter?
