America certainly is a unique country and we actually have all kinds of things that other people really don’t understand. Whether it’s odd traditions or nationwide obsessions, some trends just don’t exist outside of America—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing! Some Americans are quite serious about getting discounts and we engage in extreme couponing, which involves combining deals, promotions & coupons. Doing so helps us get cartloads of groceries for a fraction of the cost—there are stories of shoppers paying just a few dollars for hundreds worth of products! We’ll go to lengths to save a buck and extreme couponing doesn’t really exist in other countries in the same way.

Infomercials and Home Shopping Networks

Late-night TV in America is filled with infomercials pitching everything you could ever imagine, whether that’s gadgets or miracle kitchen tools—you name it, there’s probably an infomercial for it. Home shopping networks run around the clock to allow viewers to purchase items right from their living rooms. Of course, they do exist in other places but the sheer amount of infomercials we have is something specifically American.

Over-the-Top High School Proms

Prom in the U.S. is more than a school dance as it’s an extravagant event involving students renting limousines & buying expensive dresses or tuxedos—sometimes, they’ll spend months planning for it. The whole “promposals” thing, where students ask each other to prom in elaborate ways, is something else you’ll only get in America. Most outsiders are confused as to why we fuss so much over a high school event and they’ll never fully understand it!

Cheerleading Culture

Cheerleading in America goes beyond cheering on the sidelines because it’s actually considered a sport with its own competitions, championships & intense training schedules. Cheerleaders perform complex routines that require a lot of strength and flexibility—not to mention, plenty of coordination. Such dedication takes it from being a school activity to an important part of youth sports in the U.S. that doesn’t really exist elsewhere.

Wearing Shoes Indoors

While many cultures consider it polite to remove shoes before entering a home, Americans often keep them on and that’s why walking straight from the street into the living room in the same shoes is so normal. As such, it catches many visitors off guard because they’re used to leaving shoes at the door to keep floors clean. We do have house shoes but not everybody uses them!

Obsession with Pickup Trucks

Pickup trucks are a popular choice for Americans on their daily drives—not just for hauling goods—which is why you’ll see them everywhere. Many owners never even use the truck bed for heavy-duty tasks, whether it’s those that live in the city or those in rural areas! We just have a preference for large vehicles that comes from a culture that values size & a commanding presence on the road.

Love for Monster Truck Shows

Speaking of cars, monster truck shows are a popular form of entertainment across America and feature massive trucks with oversized wheels performing stunts or crushing smaller cars. Some of them even race around dirt tracks! Families flock to arenas to witness all the high-energy action and such a fascination with gigantic vehicles is a part of American motorsport culture that’s rather unconventional.

Obsession with Ranch Dressing

Most Americans have a special place in their hearts (and stomachs) for ranch dressing & unlike other countries, it’s not simply for salads—people dip pizza, fries, chicken wings, almost anything into it! As such, ranch is one of those condiments that almost every American keeps stocked in their household because they never know when they’ll want to dip. Our widespread love for creamy dressings isn’t something you see everywhere else.

Obsession with College Fraternities and Sororities

Fraternities & sororities are quite important in American colleges and these organizations give students a chance to join a close community with shared values & traditions. Most members live together in designated houses and take part in charitable events as they build lifelong connections. The focus on Greek life is, ironically, very American—it’s a big part of the college experience but not as prevalent elsewhere.

Line Dancing at Country Bars

Line dancing is a common pastime in many American towns and especially in the South & Midwest. You’ll see people gathering to perform choreographed dances in unison to popular country songs at all sorts of country bars and dance halls! For us, it’s a social activity that’s easy to join (even for newcomers) and it brings communities together through music & movement.
