10 Twitter Changes That Frustrate Users

Twitter—sorry, “X”—has gone through so many changes, most users just sigh and keep scrolling. But that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped noticing. A lot of tweaks over the years didn’t go over so well, and some of them still quietly frustrate the people who’ve stuck around. These aren’t just the big headline shifts. Some are low-key changes that chipped away at what made Twitter feel simple, quick, or fun. And even now, people haven’t stopped bringing them up.

Here are 10 changes users still complain about (sometimes under their breath, sometimes in all caps).

The Name Change to “X” (Still Doesn’t Feel Right)

Most people still call it Twitter, even on “X.” The new name doesn’t roll off the tongue, doesn’t match the culture, and kind of killed the whole “tweet” branding. It’s a rebrand no one really asked for.

The “For You” Tab Always Pushing Stuff You Didn’t Follow

You open the app, and suddenly you’re seeing posts from strangers, brands, or accounts you’ve never heard of. The algorithm decides what’s “for you,” and it’s not always right. People just wanted to see their actual timeline—not someone arguing in a language they don’t speak.

Verified Checkmarks Turned Into a Joke

What used to feel like a symbol of credibility now just means someone paid for it. People still mock the blue check, and plenty unfollow accounts the second they see it. It lost all the weight it used to carry.

Promoted Tweets That Don’t Even Pretend to Fit

Half the time, the ads you see don’t even match your interests. One minute you’re scrolling through jokes about doing laundry, and then you’re seeing ads for cryptocurrency scams or fake sunglasses. The targeting is random at best.

Twitter Circles Getting Removed (Even If Only a Handful of People Used Them)

Those who appreciated their private tweet circles felt betrayed by this change. It was one of the only ways to post something and not have random replies come in. Now it’s just open again, whether you like it or not.

The Edit Button Being Paywalled

Users requested an edit button for many years. Users had to pay monthly fees to access the product after it was released. That’s not what people asked for.

Search Results Showing the Most Random Stuff First

Try searching a topic and see what’s first in the results. A lot of the time, the top tweets are old, not relevant, or from accounts that don’t make sense. Live reactions are difficult to find nowadays which makes it pointless to participate in real-time experiences.

Spaces Interrupting Everything (Even When You Don’t Use Them)

You open the app and a bunch of purple circles are everywhere. Even if you don’t care about live audio, Twitter keeps trying to push it. Spaces feel more like clutter than content.

Auto Refresh That Takes Away the Tweet You Were Reading

You’re halfway through a thread, and boom—it refreshes. Now the tweet’s gone, and good luck finding it again. It’s a tiny issue that still drives people nuts.

More Bots, Less Real People

Replies under tweets are flooded with fake giveaways, bots, and random spam. It’s harder to find actual conversations now. Even simple questions get buried under it all, and people ask: “Is anyone real on here anymore?”
