The Top 10 Things Kids Need, According to Boomers

Have you ever considered what is really necessary for kids today? If you asked Boomers, they would probably have endless amounts to say based on their own childhood experiences. Back then, life was so much simpler- not everyone owned a mobile phone or played on the PlayStation all day long. It normally involved playing outside.

Boomers think the way they lived made them the responsible adults they are today, and that kids these days could really use some of it. So, what do Boomers think every kid needs? Here are the top 10, according to them.

It was normal for the Boomers to go outside and play with friends all day, even until the sun set in the evening sky. That is why they always say that activities like climbing trees, riding bikes or playing tag should be encouraged among modern kids so that they will become more independent and creative in the long run.

Boomers are upset that kids are more used to online communication instead of face-to-face personal socialization. They think back to a time when friendships were created by doing things together and talking in person, not through texting or social media platforms. These interactions develop communication skills, empathy and the ability to form deep, meaningful relationships.

Boomers also believe in teaching kids responsibilities from a very young age. Boomers entered the working world faster than any other generation- whether it is mowing lawns for a few dollars, helping mom with dinner to not get grounded or just cleaning their rooms, you could count on Boomers to learn the value of labor. They see chores as a way of teaching children responsibility & accountability.

Unstructured Time

One thing Boomers truly cherish is the virtue of free time — not spending every available moment bouncing between activities or staring at screens. They think boredom can be a positive stepping point, too. It helps kids to get creative and create their own adventures. Boomers had to get creative as kids with their play since they were often left alone, which many feel taught them how to be resourceful and learn self reliance early in life.

Family dinners are a way of life for boomers, who grew up sitting down for supper every night and believe it is essential to keep the tradition alive. Gathering around a table to eat fosters conversation, improves relationships and develops the feeling of family. Meal time for boomers was more than food — it was the daily opportunity to see how things were going, to catch up and stay plugged in.

Books and Reading

Many Boomers had a habit of regular reading in their households, and they think that is something kids today need more. Library books, classic novels — even now Baby Boomers can still recall the fun and fancy of reading. They believe that books can not only improve literacy but also expand a child’s view of the world — making them curious and helping them think critically.

Boomers view failure as a teachable moment that every kid ought to have. They did not have the “everyone gets a trophy” generation. They learned that it was ok to fail and fall down, but you pick yourself back up and try again. Boomers value failure as a learning experience, leading to resilience and perseverance – an applicable skill beneficial for life.

We often hear Boomers fondly talk about drawing, model-making, or arts and crafts they used to spend time on. These activities helped keep them busy and offered a creative outlet. It also taught them patience, focus, and gave them the confidence to complete tasks they might otherwise shy away from.

Respect for others is something Boomers think kids should be taught. Boomers were raised to be respectful of their elders, the teachers and peers. They feel something is wrong with today’s generation because this respect might not exist anymore in our fast world. For Boomers, ‘respect’ meant being nice, listening to people and believing that everyone deserves basic human decency.
