Leave Your Car Running While Refueling

It is unsafe to have your car running as you are pumping gas. Fuel fumes are extremely flammable, and even a tiny flame could start a fire. It’s safe to turn off your car to avoid this. Even though it may be a hassle, it is the simplest way to make sure you and others are safe. Plus, almost every gas station requires you to turn off the engine before fueling.
Use Your Phone While Pumping Gas

It might feel fine to pull out your phone during a fill-up, but it is not advised. Electronics can produce static electricity or sparks from time to time – in the presence of combustible fuel that is not a bet you want to take. It’s also easy to get distracted by your phone and forget you’re dealing with something dangerous. Pay attention to the task to avoid mishaps.

Smoke Near the Pumps

Smoking near gas pumps is a big no-no. Gasoline vapors are invisible, but very flammable. Even a tiny ember from a cigarette will get those fumes going and start a serious fire. If you need to smoke, move as far away from the pumps as possible and follow any rules the station has for designated smoking areas.
Forget to Check Your Tires

Check your tire pressure before getting back on the road. You should never drive on over- or underinflated tires, especially if you are going to drive a long distance. A lot of gas stations have air pumps you can borrow for free or very cheaply. This simple check can prevent you from getting a flat or losing control of your car on the highway.
Leave Valuables in Plain Sight

When you are on the road, you’re a target for theft. Leaving valuables like phones, wallets or laptops out there in the open while stopping at a gas station is asking for trouble. Lock your vehicle and put things in the trunk or glove box. The small act can prevent you from losing your valuables.
Let Your Gas Tank Get Too Low

Don’t let your gas tank drop too low before refilling it, as it adds stress and can damage your car. You may be out on the road and, in some remote locations you won’t see another gas station for miles. Refill before your tank runs out. This way you won’t be stranded and you will also keep your car in good condition.
Ignore the Bathroom Break

Gas stations are a good way to take care of your bathroom needs on the road. When you skip a break, that can be uncomfortable down the road, especially if the next stop is far away. Even if you don’t feel the need to go, it’s worth taking advantage of the stop just in case.
Park Too Close to the Pumps

If you’re not refueling, don’t park right next to the gas pumps. This prevents other people from refilling their tanks. Instead, park in an area away from the pumps if you want to grab snacks, go to the bathroom or stretch your legs. That’s a little kindness that makes life easier for everyone.
Forget to Pay Attention to Local Rules

Gas station regulations vary by location. Some states or nations may have unique regulations such as pumping your own gas or paying before fueling. Ignoring these guidelines can lead to confusion, or even fines. Take a look at signs or talk to an attendant if you don’t know.
Ignore Your Surroundings

When stopping at a gas station (particularly in a new place), be aware of what is going on around you. Road trips can take you to unknown territories, and not every stop is a guarantee of safety. Keep an eye on your belongings, lock your doors & do not venture out into dark spaces. You can protect yourself by being vigilant.
Forget to Clean Your Windshield

If you drive a long distance, you can get your windshield covered by dirt, insects, or grime that will make it almost impossible to see clearly. Most gas stations have free squeegees and cleaning supplies. Clean your windshield when filling up your tank for a few minutes. It makes driving easier and safer, especially at night.
