17 things the internet took the joy out of

People used to do lots of things without even thinking. But then the internet arrived and rearranged all of our thoughts in the process. It’s not all been bad; some things are definitely better. But in a lot of ways, the internet has taken the fun out of the little things. The internet has made so many normal things annoying, cringe, or obnoxious. Here are 17 normal things that used to be totally normal, until the internet got involved.

Being Bored

Back in the day, you could just sit and stare at the ceiling, make a chain of paper clips, or just look busy doing nothing. You’d be bored out of your mind and do the stupidest things just to entertain yourself. Think how many hours you talked to your pet, watched the paint dry, or shuffled your sock drawer. Nowadays, as soon as you feel that boredom creeping in, your fingers instinctively open your phone without you thinking twice.

Privacy

You could live a private life without everyone knowing your lunch order, your home address, what your room looks like, or when you’re going to be out of the house. Now people accidentally post their location, their face, and their emotional breakdowns all in one day—and don’t even realize it until it’s been screenshotted. Privacy is dead.

Polite Disagreements

Once upon a time, you could simply state “I prefer the old version” or “I don’t really like it” and that’s that. Now that innocent opinion gets screenshot, tweeted, hyper-analyzed, and then thrown back in your face with a 47-comment discussion about how you “should educate yourself.”

Not Knowing Everything Instantly

You could have a debate with your friends over who’s in that movie, what a song lyric was, or what a slang term meant. Everyone could be arguing over what they thought and then no one would be able to look it up to find out for sure. The mystery was part of the fun back then, but nowadays someone just has to whip out their phone and say “Oh it’s actually blah blah blah!” and the conversation is dead.

Enjoying Things Unironically

Back in the day, you could belt out your favorite boy band songs, wear butterfly clips in your hair, or collect stuffed toys without people questioning if you were just being ironic. Now people expect you to hate all the normal things because social media expects you to. If you like something, people want to know if it’s a “bit” or a “satire.” Can’t we just enjoy things just because they’re fun and that’s it?

Taking Photos for Memories

We used to take photos that were crooked, blurry, and sometimes even had a thumb over the lens—and we were so proud of them. They’d get put in an album rather than posted online. These days, if a photo isn’t edited, filtered, and “aesthetic,” people make a fuss as if it’s not worthy to be seen.

Misspelling Things Without Shame

You could handwrite a note to a friend that said “your invited” or “we r here!” with no one giving you a hard time. Nowadays, someone types a single word wrong online and the grammar police descend like it’s the mother of all spelling mistakes.

Meeting People Organically

You’d meet people at parks, libraries, or at someone’s house from actual conversations face-to-face. You’d bond over strange snacks, a terrible TV show, or sharing an umbrella during a rainstorm. These days it’s swiping and months of texting before you even lock eyes.

Being Unreachable

If someone didn’t answer your call, you’d just leave a message and carry on with your life. Now if you don’t reply to a text message in five minutes, people think you’re mad at them, you’re ghosting them, or you’re dead.

Having Opinions Without Broadcasting Them

Back in the day, you’d rant at your best friend and then be done with it. Now people make whole threads, record 3-part videos, or post “hot takes” on Twitter so they can feel validated and stay relevant. You don’t need to share every thought you have with the world to be heard.

Going on Vacation Without Posting

Vacations used to be about relaxing, not creating content. You didn’t need drone shots of your breakfast, filming yourself walking into a café, or getting 8 outfit changes a day just to share it online. You weren’t on holiday for the gram, you were on holiday because you wanted a holiday.

Being Yourself

You didn’t care if your hobby was a little weird, or if your clothes didn’t match. You were living your life being you, and that was it. Now everyone is about “personal branding,” and it’s like they think being a little quirky and offbeat is a crime; unless it’s cute and carefully curated.

Watching TV Without Spoilers

You could miss a TV show by sleeping or being busy and it was no big deal. Now if you don’t binge-watch it as soon as it’s released, someone will send you a meme with the entire ending of the season on it. There’s no such thing as being spoiler-free these days.

Childhood Without Surveillance

Kids used to play outside until dark, ride their bikes, and make mud pies. Now there’s GPS trackers, nanny cams, apps to track what they’re watching, how much they’re playing games, and where they are. No one can be out of sight these days, no matter how old you are.

Real Conversations

People used to just sit with each other and actually talk. There were no phones, no one scrolling while someone was talking, no one checking their notifications mid-sentence. People remembered birthdays, they made eye contact and actually listened to each other. Conversations are now completely surface level, everyone’s distracted, and multitasking even during dinner.

Making Mistakes Privately

You could say stupid things, make weird faces, embarrass yourself, and look like an idiot, all in the comfort of your home or offline. Now one little mistake can be screen-recorded, posted online, and have you judged and laughed at by people you’ve never met before you even realize what’s happening.

Being Cringe Without Caring

You could wear glitter on your cheeks, do make-believe dances with your friends, or talk in random voices—and that was fun. Now people are so worried about being “cringe” when in reality, that’s the best part of being human.
