17 Things That Bother Boomers Like Me

I love a good rant. What can I say? Things just aren’t the way they used to be — and I’m not afraid to point it out. Call it nostalgia, call it common sense, or just call it me being honest. From how people dress to how they talk (or don’t), I can’t help but notice the little things that’ve gone downhill. Sure, younger people might roll their eyes and tune me out but that’s not going to stop me. So here it is — 17 things I find myself griping about all the time, even if no one else seems to care anymore.

People Wearing Hats Indoors

I know I’m old-fashioned – but putting on a hat during dinner just feels wrong to me. Back in the day, we took off our hats as a sign of respect – in school, church or even when visiting grandma. I now notice people wearing beanies while eating spaghetti – as if it’s a fashion statement.

Texting Instead Of Calling

No one seems to pick up the phone anymore. When I call someone they ignore my ring and five seconds later they send a “what’s up?” text. What’s up? I wanted to talk! You know, with words and voices and everything.

Walking Around With Headphones 24/7

People nowadays live in their own personal bubbles. People wear headphones while shopping at grocery stores, during walks at the park or when they take their dogs for a walk. How can you listen to birds singing when you’re wearing headphones — or notice a stranger telling you to pick up your fallen wallet?

Not Making Eye Contact

Back in my day, eye contact showed both confidence and respect. The new generation prefers looking down at the floor or wall or at their phones to avoid eye contact. It feels like having a conversation with a Sims character.

Wearing Ripped Jeans… On Purpose

Ripping your pants while climbing a tree or when biking was okay. But people now buy jeans with pre-made holes and pay a higher price for them. I must’ve missed something there.

Saying “No Worries” Instead Of “You’re Welcome”

Thank-You Notes

When I say “thank you” I hear “no worries” or “no prob” but where did the traditional “you’re welcome” go? It just feels more polite. “No worries” makes it sound like I almost inconvenienced you.

Tipping On Everything

When I bought a cookie recently, the payment screen rotated to request a tip from me. For what? I personally collected the cookie and walked out. I am not being stingy – but tipping is going out of hand.

People Being Late And Calling It “Fashionable”

If we agreed to meet at 3 PM, I’m there at 2:55. That’s just how I was raised. But nowadays, people show up twenty minutes late like it’s charming. Newsflash: it’s not.

Digital Menus

I sit down at a restaurant and they tell me to scan a code for the menu. I don’t want to play a mini game on my phone — I just want to see the burger options. Give me the sticky laminated menu and let’s move on.

The Volume In Movie Theaters

Either I can’t hear what anyone’s saying because they’re whisper-mumbling, or the explosions are so loud I jump out of my seat. I miss when movies had a normal sound range. Or maybe I’m just too used to subtitles now.

Nobody Knows How To Write A Proper Letter

Getting a handwritten card or letter used to mean something. Now, it’s all emails and DMs. Nice enough, sure, but there’s no heart in it. Just a blinking cursor and autocorrect.

Wokeness This, Woke That

Look, I get that times change, and people want to be kind and fair — that’s great. But it feels like you can’t say anything these days without someone getting offended. I miss being able to joke without writing an apology letter after.

Sitting At Restaurants And Everyone’s On Their Phones

I look around at a table and no one’s even talking. Just scrolling, texting, taking photos of their food. I came here to eat and chat, not to be third-wheeled by your phone.

Job Hopping Every Year

People stayed at the same company for many years. Built pensions, friendships, some loyalty. It feels like musical chairs at work where people switch jobs every six months yet they still don’t know how to operate the copier.

People saying “LOL” out loud

People just say “L-O-L” when they talk instead of laughing properly. That one gets me every time. When you choose to voice “laugh out loud,” make sure to actually laugh. Make a noise. Chuckle. Something.

I was raised to dress like you might run into someone important. These days people actually walk into banks dressed in pajama bottoms and bunny slippers. Can we at least pretend like we put on clothes to go outside?

Nobody Answers Their Door Anymore

As soon as I knock on the door it feels like the house immediately enters lockdown mode. All lights are turned off and the blinds are shut tight, which makes me feel like the the IRS. I stopped by to give banana bread – not a subpoena.
