Millennials have quite a few frustrations that are unique to their generation & other age groups don’t always understand them—or even try to. They grew up during rapid technological changes and changing cultural norms, which has led to certain annoyances that older or younger generations just don’t get. Here are twelve specific things that millennials complain about which don’t bother other generations at all. That’s not to say any of these complaints are valid or invalid but they sure are interesting to hear.

Being Labeled the “Participation Trophy” Generation

Millennials are often quite annoyed about being called the “participation trophy” generation because they didn’t ask for trophies just for showing up—but now they’re criticized for it. They feel misunderstood & unfairly judged based on something they didn’t start. If anything, older generations are responsible because they created this practice, so it’s not right to blame millennials for it.
Being Blamed for “Killing” Traditional Industries

Most millennials are frustrated when they’re accused of “killing” industries like department stores, golf & casual dining chains as they believe it’s unfair to blame them for changing market trends. These trends are influenced by many factors and headlines that single this generation out make them tired of being the scapegoat for shifts in consumer behavior. Other generations don’t face this kind of criticism tied to their age group, so they don’t feel the same way.
Difficulty Affording Housing Due to Rising Prices

They frequently complain about how hard it is to buy a home these days since housing prices are soaring and wages haven’t kept up—homeownership is impossible for most millennials. They feel stuck renting & unable to invest in property like their parents did at their age, which is quite a unique complaint. Older generations either bought homes before prices skyrocketed and younger ones are just about entering the market.
Being the First Generation Earning Less Than Their Parents

Likewise, millennials worry about being the first generation expected to earn less than their parents, which is mostly due to economic challenges like wage stagnation & rising living costs. These issues make financial stability harder to achieve and this generation feels anxious about affording things like retirement savings or even starting a family. Many other generations have never dealt with the same forecast so they don’t share this particular concern.
Frustration with Unpaid Internships Being Necessary for Career Entry

Unpaid internships were practically a necessity for most millennials to break into their desired careers, even though working for free feels exploitative. It also creates barriers for those who can’t afford to do so and that’s why this generation is annoyed by entry-level jobs that demand experience through unpaid positions. Boomers and Gen Xers had more traditional paths into the workforce which means that they don’t relate to this complaint.
Feeling Overqualified but Underemployed

Speaking of jobs, this generation is frustrated that they’re overqualified for jobs they could get but unable to land positions that match their education & skills. They have plenty of degrees and certifications—yet they’re often in roles that don’t utilize their knowledge, which is rather demoralizing. It was normal for older generations to have more opportunities that matched their qualifications, or at least less level of competition for jobs.
Frustration with the Misuse of the Term “Millennial”

Many people use the term “millennial” to describe anyone younger, lumping this generation together with Gen Z or even Gen Alpha—meaning that older generations blame “millennials” for trends or behaviors that have nothing to do with them. It’s a kind of broad mislabeling that creates misunderstandings & unfair stereotypes that millennials feel are not their fault. They’re tired of correcting others about their actual age group and who they really are.
Being Priced Out of Cities They Helped Make Popular

Millennials helped to revitalize many urban areas through their spending habits, but now, many of them have become too expensive for this generation to live in. They moved into cities, supported local businesses & created vibrant communities, yet rising living costs have pushed them out. Unfortunately, other generations usually own homes or prefer suburban living and so they don’t understand this kind of annoyance.
Feeling Overwhelmed by Wellness Culture

The pressure of wellness culture that’s all over social media is too much for many millennials, who feel bombarded by expectations to maintain perfect diets & exercise routines—let’s not forget about self-care practices. Older generations aren’t usually as involved in social media or are influenced by online wellness trends, which makes this a rather unique complaint. The constant stream of advice & promotion is overwhelming for millennials.
Annoyance with Endless Subscription Services

It’s no secret that subscription services are everywhere these days, whether that’s for software or razors, meaning that what used to be one-time purchases now require monthly fees. Those costs add quite a bit and millennials feel trapped in a cycle of recurring payments just to access basic products or services. What makes it a millennial complaint is that older generations don’t engage with as many subscriptions, while younger generations accept them as the norm.
Nostalgia for Early Social Media Without Influencers

Gone are the days when social media simply involved connecting with friends—now, following influencers & brand promotions are how these sites work and millennials feel that platforms have become overly commercialized. These sites have lost the personal touch they once had and it’s something only millennials get because older generations didn’t really use social media before influencers became prominent. Gen Z and Gen Alpha don’t remember a time without them!
Feeling Caught Between Traditional and Modern Expectations

Most millennials feel stuck between traditional life milestones that older generations promote and the modern realities they face. Society encourages them to buy homes, marry & have children by a certain age yet economic and social factors make these goals harder than ever to achieve. As such, they constantly feel pressured and inadequate while they struggle with the gap between expectations and reality.
