Your kitchen has all the things you use every day – some of which may not be in top condition anymore. Worn-out or old kitchen items make cooking more difficult, spread germs or even impact the flavor of your food. Having some things replaced sooner rather than later keeps your kitchen neater and more effective. Everything from sponges to spices needs to be replaced when it’s time. Here are 10 kitchen items you need to replace regularly to make sure everything stays in good condition.

Sponges

Sponge in your kitchen can be one of the dirtiest items in your home. They absorb grease, food particles and bacteria with each use. Even when they’re not dirty – sponges should be changed every 1-2 weeks. An old sponge can even transfer germs onto your plates and counters – replacing it regularly is an easy way to make your kitchen cleaner and safer.
Plastic Cutting Boards

Over time, plastic cutting boards get cuts and scratches where bacteria can lurk inside. Even a good wash won’t get everything off. So if your cutting board is chipped or stained, get a new one. Wooden or bamboo cutting boards are more durable and easier to clean, if you treat them well.

Non-Stick Pans

Non-stick pans don’t last forever. The coating deteriorates over time, and once chipped or peeled it will leak harmful chemicals into your food. If your pots are scratched or food is sticking a bit too much, it’s time to upgrade. Buying a high-quality pan will save you money and make your food healthier.
Knives

A dull knife isn’t just annoying to use — it’s dangerous because more force is needed to cut with it. If sharpening your knives does not make them perform better, it’s time for a new set. Good knives can last for years, but daily wear and tear eventually damages them. Cooking is easier and safer when you replace old knives.
Plastic Containers

Plastic containers for food can crack, stain or hold odors – especially when being heated up in the microwave. Some old plastics may have ingredients such as BPA, that are unsafe for food storage. Switching to glass containers is a longer-lasting, less-toxic way to store leftovers.
Dish Towels

Dish towels are used constantly, which makes them a breeding ground for germs. They can be tarnished or begin to smell even if you wash them regularly. If your dish towels are worn out or not absorbent enough, buy a new set. Fresh towels are not only more effective but keep your kitchen neat.
Water Filters

Water filters in pitchers or refrigerators become ineffective over time. If you notice a change in taste or it’s been months since your last refill, get a new one. When you change the filter on a regular basis, your water will remain pure and free of contamination.
Baking Sheets

Hot temperatures, oil, and greasy foods can destroy baking sheets. They can warp, get stained or rusty with use. When your baking sheets become non-cleanable or food stick more frequently, replace them and baking will become easier and more fun.
Blender Gaskets

The rubber gasket in the bottom of your blender jar is sealed to keep it leak-proof. But it can break down or collect food particles over time, causing leaks or odd odors. If your blender isn’t working as well as it used to, you can get it to feel like new by changing the gasket.
Condiments and Spices

Many don’t even realize that spices and condiments have expiration dates. Spice lose its flavor, and expired condiments take on odors or even harbor bacteria. Check the label on these products and discard anything that is too old. Fresh spices and condiments make your meals taste much better.
