I used to have my purse filled to the brim with things I believed I might “need” but over time, I was actually using very few of those things. My purse became a burden instead of a relief to me. So, I decided to simplify. By getting rid of stuff that I rarely or never used, I also made my life a lot easier. Here are 12 things I no longer put in my purse and why this small shift has felt so refreshing.

Bulky Keychains

There was a time when my keyring was full of extra keys I didn’t even recognize. Having to search my purse for the key was a hassle. And now I have only my house key, my car key, and one small charm. It’s easier to carry, my purse is lighter too.
Makeup Bag

I used to take a full makeup bag with me everywhere I went. But as I grew older, I would only add some lipstick or powder at most. And now, all I carry is a tiny mini mirror and lip gloss.

Expired Membership Cards

I had a wallet full of loyalty and membership cards that I didn’t use over the years. Some were out of date or in stores I stopped going to. These days, most memberships are tied to my phone number or an app, so I don’t even need to carry the physical cards. That’s saved me a ton of room in my wallet.
Receipts

My wallet would get filled with bills I kept just for no reason. The majority of the time I didn’t even return to them. These days I save receipts only for larger purchases or returns. If I have to keep one for a while, I photograph it and save it into my phone. This way my wallet is organized.
Contact List Book

I once had a little phone book with all my important contacts. It was useful then, but became old and bulky with time. Now I save all the contact numbers into my phone and it is way faster and simple to update a number.
Loose Change

My purse was always full of coins, and they would sink to the bottom, difficult to catch when I really needed some change. Now at home I have a little jar to put the coins in. I then take it to the bank or a coin machine after it’s filled. And with all these shops that are now accepting cards and electronic payments, I practically never use coins anymore anyway.
Extra Pens

For years, I kept three or four pens in my purse, because I worried about running out of ink. But I found I rarely used more than one. I have only one steady pen now, and I carry it around with me. (Small, but just good enough for a note or form).
Old Photos

I also liked to carry pocket-sized, printed photos of my family. But eventually they became old and faded and that made me sad. Every photo I like now is stored in my phone and I can go back and view them whenever I want.
Paper Planner

I used to use a paper planner to write down appointments, birthdays and special events. But it was too big. I now use my phone’s calendar app and it even reminds me. I mean it’s such a simple shift but it has helped me manage my days so much better.
Emergency Snacks

I used to keep some granola bars or chocolates in my purse for emergencies, but they’d get crushed or melt. Now I keep them in my car or at home, where they stay fresh. If I am in a hurry, I can just go and grab some stuff from a nearby store rather than constantly walking around with food in my purse.
Old Business Cards

I’d kept business cards from people I’ve known for years and my wallet was piling up. Most of them were outdated, and I couldn’t even remember to whom they belonged. I now save important contacts on my phone or snap a quick picture of the card to save it. It’s easier and my wallet isn’t so full.
Too Much Cash

I once felt safer carrying lots of money, but now I don’t have to. I use credit cards, debit cards, and digital wallets like Apple Pay to pay for my daily purchases. I only keep a couple of dollars in my purse for emergencies (because some shops don’t accept cards).
