15 things Americans used to do for themselves

Let’s face it — we’ve gotten really comfortable. Once upon a time, we took care of our own repairs, remembered phone numbers by heart and made microwave-free meals. Now? We have access to apps, services, and gadgets that handle all our tasks and we genuinely don’t mind. In this list, we will look at 15 things Americans handled themselves but now prefer to delegate to others.

Memorize Phone Numbers

We used to remember our best friend’s number, our grandma’s number and even the local pizza place’s number – we didn’t need to write them down or save them in digital devices. Now? When your phone runs out of battery, so does your social life. Most of us now can’t remember our own numbers without scrolling through the contact list.

Mow Their Own Lawns

Lawn mowing used to be a weekly chore – push mower, iced tea break, rinse and repeat. Today, people often turn to professional landscaping companies or hire that neighbor’s kid saving to buy an iPad. Some even let their lawns continue growing until they look like wildlife sanctuaries.

Write Letters by Hand

Handwritten notes had a unique charm. They had doodles, scribbles and reflected the writer’s personality. Nowadays, when we receive a real letter, we immediately think it’s probably an invitation to a wedding or a jury summons. Social interactions now rely mostly on emojis, simple “k” replies and messages left unread.

Fix Simple Things Around the House

Leaky taps, fuse changes and shelf installations used to be simple tasks people performed with ease. Now, it’s more like: “Should I call someone or just live with it broken forever?” YouTube tutorials are great but we still end up paying someone anyway.

Cook Every Meal from Scratch

Dinner used to mean pots bubbling on the stove and recipes passed down from grandma. Now it’s: “What’s quick, cheap, and won’t require me to wash dishes?” Takeout, frozen meals and DoorDash have officially taken over the kitchen.

Sew or Mend Clothes

Missing button? Torn hem? Grandma could have repaired that problem within ten minutes. Today? We either claim the rip gives it a “vintage style” look or throw it into the donation bin. Most of us don’t have sewing kits or know what one looks like.

Clean Their Own Cars

Saturday mornings once meant washing cars in the driveway to the sound of loud music. Now? We just swing by the drive-thru car wash once in a blue moon and let machines do the work — while we scroll Instagram in the front seat.

Develop Film Photos

Remember disposable cameras? After taking 24 mystery photos on a disposable camera, you’d wait a week only to discover that half of them turned out blurry or someone blinked. We now snap 50 selfies and select only one to edit before posting it online.

Iron Clothes Regularly

People ironed their clothes every day as part of their dressing routine. Now, it’s like, “Eh, it’ll smooth out by lunchtime.” If it’s really bad, we either hang it in the bathroom while we shower or just buy wrinkle-free clothes and call it a day.

Make Their Own Coffee

People used to wake up, grind beans, boil water, and brew coffee like it was sacred. Now, we line up in drive-thrus for overpriced lattes we could technically make at home — but let’s be honest, the barista does it better (and we want the cute cup).

Change a Flat Tire

Knowing how to change a flat tire was once a life skill – like learning how to tie shoes. We now immediately contact AAA or a friend when we hear the “thump thump” sound on the highway. The jack is probably in your trunk but finding it (and using it) will be a challenge.

Balance a Checkbook

People used to use small ledgers to record every single penny that came in and went out. Now, we just hope our banking app doesn’t say “declined.” Auto-pay handles the bills, and the rest is vibes and wishful thinking.

Memorize Directions

Before GPS, you’d write down directions or actually remember landmarks like “turn left at the big red barn.” Today, we depend on that little blue dot to lead the way — and we’re totally lost if it disappears for even a second.

Make Their Own Travel Plans

Travel planning used to need either visiting a travel agent or creating an itinerary from the ground up. Now? Whenever you watch a TikTok of someone’s vacation, you can immediately book the travel package mentioned in the video caption. Influencers have already completed the research work for us.

Shovel Their Own Snow

People used to wake up early to shovel snow during winter. Now, it won’t be done unless you have a snowblower or hire someone with Venmo for $40. People drive right through the snow and trust that their tires will handle it.
