The World Is Running Out of Places to Put All Its Batteries

The battery boom is creating a second problem: what happens when billions of batteries eventually reach the end of their useful lives.

1. Demand Is Exploding
EVs and battery storage already account for roughly 90% of today’s lithium-ion battery market. Global deployment of lithium-ion batteries increased more than sixfold between 2020 and 2025. (IEA)

2. EV Batteries Don’t Simply Become Trash
A battery that is no longer strong enough for a car can still have useful capacity. Companies are increasingly testing retired EV batteries for stationary storage, where weight and range matter much less.

3. Recycling Is Becoming a Major Industry
Recycling can recover valuable lithium, nickel and cobalt rather than requiring all-new mining. The IEA estimates battery recycling could eventually supply 20% to 30% of lithium, nickel and cobalt demand by 2050, depending heavily on collection rates. (IEA)

China has built more than 85% of the world’s battery-recycling capacity and is requiring stronger tracking and recovery of retired batteries. The U.S. and Europe are pursuing different approaches, including giving batteries a second life before recycling them. (Rest of World)
