A sharp mind is not always visible externally, but there are some tells that can give you insight into how a person thinks.
You predict the objection

Sometimes before stating your position, you argue with yourself. You imagine what someone may refute you with, find the flaws in your logic, and change your stance before anyone can speak. It slows your decision-making process, but you also never get too invested in one idea. You are stress-testing your thinking rather than having someone else do it for you.
The messy middle

Do you tend to notice what’s not being told when someone gives you a story? Good reasoning sometimes means identifying holes instead of digesting what you hear. You might question why someone didn’t mention some key piece of information, realize that two portions of an explanation don’t mesh, or see that there simply isn’t enough evidence to draw the conclusion that everyone else seems to have accepted.
Sometimes, a person’s intelligence shows itself when they are not finding an answer quickly, but know that there is not enough information to give one yet.
A second interpretation

You hear someone making a claim you vehemently oppose. However, you can still explain to yourself how someone else could believe that claim. You can entertain two competing explanations in your mind without fully committing to accepting either of them.
It takes mental agility to not view everything as black and white. You can stand back from your own beliefs and think about an idea from someone else’s point of view.
The exception appears

Someone makes a statement like “Everybody does this” or “That always happens,” and your brain instantly comes up with a counterexample. You’re not trying to be contrary. Your brain likes to challenge rules by trying to think of cases where they don’t apply. It often makes you tedious in small talk, but useful in evaluating claims.
Instructions become optional

Once you learn how to do something, you stop meticulously checking steps and start doing it your way. Perhaps you memorize an advanced keyboard shortcut for Excel, re-engineer your work process, or put that ironing board to some wicked unintended uses. It’s not so much rule-breaking that’s intriguing.
It’s knowing why a process exists in the first place to know which steps are necessary and which ones you can change. That mixture of knowing and tinkering can be indicative of good problem-solving skills.
Your brain keeps compressing

Rather than learning ten facts individually, your brain automatically attempts to compress them down to the single principle that unifies them. When you learn that principle, it suddenly makes remembering those ten facts trivial.
This mental compression allows you to greatly simplify the information you take in. It’s the reason why you can forget word-for-word what someone told you but still understand the concept perfectly. You don’t remember the information; you created a simpler model that explains it.
Something feels off

Every once in a while, you’ll know that an answer is probably incorrect before you know why. It’s not magic. Given enough experience, the brain becomes incredibly skilled at subconsciously spotting patterns and telling when something doesn’t fit. A number is too big, a sentence sounds odd compared to the rest of a story, or someone’s explanation doesn’t mesh with something you know to be true.
The critical step comes after: instead of simply accepting that something feels wrong, a strong thinker goes back and determines why.
Boredom becomes useful

Give some people five minutes of idle time, and they will instinctively pull out their smartphone. Others will look around, start thinking, daydreaming, or problem-solving. Scientists have linked daydreaming to various thought processes, including creativity.
Daydreaming doesn’t necessarily mean a person has a high IQ. However, it certainly doesn’t hurt to be able to take a boring situation and use your mind as your playground. Sometimes your brain doesn’t need someone to entertain it; it entertains itself.
The question changes

You can work for days on solving a problem only to find out you’ve been working on the wrong problem. Effective problem solvers are sometimes unusual because they question the question. Rather than “How can we do this faster?” they ask “Why are we doing this step?”
Often, reframing the problem can make the solution obvious while it hides from view if everyone agrees to the assumptions. The most intelligent thing you can do isn’t always offering a better answer but asking a better question.
Simple takes longer

When you understand something, it makes it easier to explain, not harder. If you truly understand a concept, you can often eliminate jargon, figure out what is really important, and explain it through common vernacular. This is more difficult than parroting back what you’ve heard because you have to actually parse what you think is important in the concept.
If you can communicate a complex concept in simple terms without losing the concept’s true meaning, you show an understanding that fancy terminology cannot mask.
