The 12 Most Useful Skills That Seem to Be Forgotten

As I have aged, I can’t tell you how much I miss doing some of the things I used to just do, even without thinking about them. My parents taught me all these things growing up, and these things are not the things people seem to enjoy today. I love all the easy access to tools and apps we have today, but there are some days I wish I hadn’t let some of these vital skills slide away.

In this article, we will take a look at 12 practical skills that seem long lost to us, and why it is perhaps time to bring them back into our daily lives.

Cooking From Scratch

With fast food, meal delivery services and pre-packaged meals, it is no longer a necessity for most people to cook from scratch. You can order food rather than make it yourself. However, cooking basic food is both affordable and healthier. It helps you choose what’s in your meals and makes you feel good about it. It’s also a great way to connect with people over a good home-cooked meal.

Once we used to sign business cards, make notes to friends, or even write lists of things by hand so we know where to place our thoughts. Handwritten notes were also an excellent mode of self-expression. But, today typing on keyboards, phones and tablets is faster and more convenient than writing by hand. And for everything people use digital notes.

What They Lost: With so many money apps and bill-paying automatons in the market, budgeting has never been more hands-off. People rely on technology to track their expenses, rather than doing it themselves.

However, when you learn how to manage money without apps, you’re forced to think through your spending and make a budget. That knowledge will help you make better financial choices, pay down debt and build an emergency fund.

Sewing on a Button (And Other Basics)

When it comes to cheap, mass-produced clothing, it’s almost not worth fixing or altering clothes. Today we are quick to ditch old clothing and go out and buy new ones. However, sewing used to be a useful skill that helped us save some money and keep our clothes lasting longer. Even something as small as fixing a button or sewing up a tear can save you from having to buy new things, which is both eco-friendly and convenient.

Growing Your Own Food

When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you will have fresh, healthier food and you will be able to spend more time in nature. It’s also a fun pastime and way to cut the grocery bill. Most of us live in big cities today and not many of us own a garden space. So with the busy schedules we have buying groceries is much cheaper than growing our own food.

Keeping Your Car in Shape

Automobiles these days are complex, so you might think only experts know how to fix it. There are plenty of motorists who take their vehicles to the shop with the tiniest of issues.

If you think about it, our fathers and grandfathers probably knew these things inside and out—they didn’t rely on mechanics for every little thing! And if you understand a few car mechanics – like changing the oil or checking the pressure on your tires – you’ll be saving some cash and avoiding breakdowns.

Handling Conflict Like a Pro

With the rise of digital exchanges, miscommunications and disagreements are brushed aside rather than resolved. Social media, too, creates a culture of avoiding uncomfortable conversations in real life. People once used to handle conflicts constructively, which led to productive relationships in the workplace and at home. It teaches us empathy, compromise, and the art of negotiation when we disagree.

Talking to People (Without a Screen)

Thanks to texts, social media, emails, and so on, people don’t interact in person as much. We’ve grown more comfortable with brief, often impersonal interactions. Good communication is a must for relationships, both at personal and professional levels. They help you be authentic, listen intently, and know others so that you can feel more connected and less confused.

Critical Thinking

The internet knows the solution to nearly everything with one quick search, so we aren’t asking questions or doing thought experiments anymore. This is bad because thinking critically lets you make better choices and not fall for misinformation.

Speaking Up in Public

Now that we have email, social media, and other written communications, people don’t practice speaking in front of others as much. Speaking in front of people is scary so most people skip it. Public speaking is a valuable tool when you want to communicate something, be it a presentation, or even run a meeting. It gives you strength and it makes your words seem real, both of which will affect your professional and personal life a great deal.

We’ve become used to calling emergency services when we have any serious medical concerns and just hope someone else will figure it out in a pinch. Did it ever occur to you that learning basic first aid, like CPR or mending a wound, can be lifesaving? You feel more prepared in case of emergencies with these skills, and you can save the day when you are desperate to help someone right now.

With GPS and smartphone apps, such as Google Maps, we no longer have the need to know how to read a paper map. And directions are only a tap away. But, if you can read a map it will really come in handy when you have lost your phone or are stuck somewhere with no signal.
