The 12 Most Misunderstood Verses in the Bible

If you’ve ever picked up a Bible and felt confused then you’re not alone. Sometimes, what we read isn’t quite what was meant and especially with verses that have been passed down through the ages. Let’s look at common mix-ups with 12 Bible verses. We’ll look at what these verses really mean and hopefully shed some light on the bigger picture behind these snippets of scripture.

“Judge not, that you be not judged” warns us never to judge others—but there’s also more to it. Jesus was telling us not to be hypocrites in all aspects of our life. We shouldn’t judge others harshly while ignoring our own faults. As such, you should remember that this verse is also telling you to live by your words.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” sounds like a personal promise from God to give you a bright future. However, it was actually a specific message for the Israelites in exile. The line teaches us about God’s plan for a nation’s future instead of individual fortunes.

Matthew 18:20

Many people in small prayer groups will use  “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” as a form of comfort. Yet this verse isn’t just about feeling God’s presence. It’s specifically about church discipline & making decisions together. Essentially, Jesus is saying he’s there in the difficult conversations about what’s right & wrong in the community, not just general gatherings.

In theory, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need,” encourages modern churchgoers to tithe in hopes of heavenly rewards. Originally, though, it focused on Israel being faithful in their covenant with God. It’s a call to trust & uphold the commitments we make to God.

Proverbs 22:6

Some people use the proverb “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” as a promise that children raised in Christian homes will stick with it forever. In reality, though, it’s more of a general wisdom about the impact of a good early foundation. It’s not a guarantee.

1 Corinthians 11:14

After hearing, “Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him?” you might think that God hates long hair! The truth is that this line just reflects the cultural norms of the time of honor & shame. Instead of just hair, this line teaches us about the social & moral expectations back then.

Of course God supports political obedience but “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities” isn’t suggesting we should have blind allegiance. Rather, Paul encourages orderliness in society and wants us to respect the role of government. He’s not saying we should justify all governmental actions.

1 Timothy 6:10

People often misquote, “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil,” and say that “money is the root of all evil.” However, 1 Timothy 6:10 actually says it’s the love of money that’s the problem. Instead of criticizing those who are financially stable or successful, the verse is actually critiquing those who worship wealth. Essentially—don’t be greedy!

Genesis 1:28

Whenever someone’s trying to show our apparent mastery over nature, they’ll probably quote the verse, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it,” from Genesis. Yet most people miss the responsibility that comes with this command. “Subdue” here means stewardship—taking care of the earth and not just using it up. We should manage our resources wisely rather than have free rein to exploit the planet.

Exodus 20:13

At face value, “You shall not murder” seems straight enough, right? But the problem is that the original Hebrew word used here specifically refers to unlawful killing—murder instead of killing through self-defense or warfare. As such, you could make the argument that this verse is telling us unlawful killing is bad but other lawful murder is acceptable.

Matthew 5:5

It’s easy to read, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,” and think being “meek” means being weak. In biblical terms, though, “meek” refers to those who have strength but choose to keep it under control. This verse wants us to have humility & patience in the face of adversity with the promise that we will eventually be rewarded for these virtues.

Truth

Let’s get one thing straight—honesty is the best policy and “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” seems to show that. But in its scriptural context, Jesus is speaking about a specific truth—the understanding of His teachings & the freedom it brings from sin. He’s not talking about general truths or secrets of the universe.
