They Seem to Have Inside Jokes
One of the clearest signs is when you walk up to your neighbors having a good laugh…only for everything to become serious when you join. If it seems like they have their own secret language of jokes & you’re always on the outside, then they might be keeping you at arm’s length. They’re doing this on purpose—they don’t like you.
Sudden Silence When You Approach
Similarly, your neighbors may be all chatty & cheerful—then, when you get close, they hit the “mute” button. Being the person that makes the atmosphere feel awkward & conversations dry up is never enjoyable. In fact, these could be signs that you’re not the company they were hoping for.

They’re Polite but Not Warm
There’s a world of difference between a neighbor who greets you with a smile that doesn’t reach their eyes & one who’s genuinely happy to see you. People who meet your “hellos” with polite yet cold nods are unlikely to be your greatest fans. They’re just being courteous to save face—not because they like you.
They Never Ask for Favors
In neighborhoods where people get along, it’s common to ask for a little help here & there. For example, someone might pick up your mail while you’re out of town. But if your neighbors never seem to need your help, even for the smallest things, it might be their way of saying they prefer keeping you out of their circle.
They Give Vague Replies to Invitations
You might’ve tried to break the ice by inviting them over for a barbecue or a cup of coffee but all you get back are non-committal answers like “maybe” or “we’ll see.” Getting a straight answer should never feel like pulling teeth. When it does, they’re trying to show you that they’re not too keen on buddy time.
They Avoid Shared Spaces When You’re There
Have you noticed your neighbors packing up their picnic the minute you step outside? Or maybe the community pool suddenly empties when you visit? People who time their outdoor activities to avoid bumping into you are people who’d rather not share space with you. But you don’t deserve to be treated that way.
Their Body Language Is Closed Off
Body language says a lot. A neighbor who has their arms crossed & body turned away from you whenever you’re talking is probably not just cold. These are little signs of discomfort or disinterest—they’re tiny yet powerful non-verbal cues that they’re not too thrilled with the conversation.
They Remember Details Incorrectly
When someone values a relationship, they remember the details. As such, any neighbors who constantly forget things you’ve told them, like what you do for a living or your kids’ names, don’t simply have a bad memory. No, they’re subtle, showing you that they’re not putting in the effort to know you.
They Only Contact You When Necessary
The only time your phone rings or there’s a knock at your door is when something’s wrong—a shared fence issue or a tree limb hanging over their yard. These shouldn’t be the only times that they reach out. When they are, then it’s clear—your interactions are strictly business & not pleasure.
They Are Quick to Remove Physical Boundaries
Whenever you accidentally kick a ball into their yard, before you can even blink they’ve thrown it over the fence. Or maybe they’re overly careful about keeping the driveway line clear. Why do they do this? Because maintaining physical boundaries is their way of keeping a personal boundary, too.
