Whenever you hear “the South,” you probably think of sweet tea & people who never lose that drawl. And while those ideas are true, there’s a whole lot more to the South. In fact, some things we’ve heard are just tall tales! That’s why today, we’re looking at 15 Southern myths that we need to set straight.

That Southern Accent

First things first—not everyone in the South sounds like they stepped out of a country music video. Sure, you’ll meet people with that charming drawl but the accents are as varied as the landscapes. All those big cities & coastal spots will make you wonder if you’re still in the South at all. Accents are the same way!
Fried Food Galore?

Now, we won’t lie because Southerners do love their fried chicken & okra but saying all Southern food is fried is selling them short. Their gardens are bursting with veggies & dishes like collard greens or sweet potatoes are popular there, too. Southern cooking involves making the most of what’s in season. There’s a lot more variety than you might think.

Hotter Than Hell

Of course, the South gets its fair share of sunshine & summers can be scorching. Yet – thinking it’s always hot ignores the truth. Winters here can get chilly—and yes, it even snows in some parts! The weather’s pretty mixed so you should pack both your shorts & your sweater if you’re visiting.
Politics as Usual

Not everyone down here votes the same. Just like any other area, the South has a mix of many different political beliefs, with cities & college towns often leaning more progressive. It’s a collection of different ideas—which means the conversations around the dinner table can get quite spicy!
Stuck in the Past

Some people think the South simply involves living in yesteryear but let me tell you—we’re not just sitting around pining for the good old days. Nope, the South has so much innovation, including tech startups & art scenes that are ahead of the curve. Sure, we honor our past but we’re always looking forward.
Sweet Tea or Bust

Sweet tea is practically liquid medicine, although it’s not the only thing we drink. In fact, you’re just as likely to find coffee, craft beers & fine spirits on a Southern table. And let’s not forget about our soda—ever heard of Cheerwine? We’ve got options, y’all — and you don’t have to drink sweet tea if you’re not up for it.
Hospitality Hype

Some skeptics think Southern hospitality is just a myth yet anyone who’s been welcomed into a Southern home knows better. It involves making people feel at home, whether you’re a lifelong neighbor or a newcomer. That warmth and friendliness is the real deal. You should feel grateful when someone shows it to you!
Country Music Only

Even though country music has its roots deep in the South, we also have rather varied musical tastes. Blues, jazz, rock, hip-hop—you name it, we’ve got it. After all, cities like New Orleans & Memphis are where musical geniuses are made so don’t be surprised to hear a little bit of everything.
Just Country Folks

If you think that the South is simply farmland & backroads then you might want to check again. We’ve got busy cities like Atlanta and Miami that are as urban as it gets since they’re full of culture and business. While the countryside may be part of our charm, it’s a complete lie since it’s not the whole story.
Barbecue Is the Same Everywhere in the South

Saying all Southern barbecue is the same is like saying all soda tastes like Coke—it’s just not true. After all, you have the tangy vinegar-based sauces of North Carolina as well as the rich, tomato-based flavors in Kansas City. Barbecue in the South is incredible! And heck, sometimes each city has its own way of doing things & we take our barbecue very seriously.
Bland Grits

Anyone who thinks grits are bland just hasn’t had them made right. Grits are the foundation of any great meal and they’re ready to be jazzed up with cheese & shrimp—or whatever else you’ve got in mind. They’re a Southern breakfast staple for a reason! With the right toppings, they’re anything but boring.
Plantation Life

Yes, plantations are part of our history but they’re not what defines us. The South has many other landscapes, including mountains & beaches, each with its own story. Don’t forget about the cities! Focusing on plantations alone misses out on the richness of what life in the South really is.
Civil War Stories

Southern literature goes beyond the Civil War, y’all. Our writers have written about everything from family dynamics to the complexities of modern life and the South has a rich literary tradition. We don’t simply write books about the past—we’re looking to the future in our stories, too.
Education Down South

The idea that Southerners aren’t educated is just plain wrong because we have some of the country’s top universities. There are also many people with degrees to prove it! We take education quite seriously, whether that’s through traditional academics or even just vocational skills.
All the Same

Last but not least, thinking the South is a monolith does a disservice to the people. We’re a blend of cultures, ethnicities & traditions. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths and it’s part of the reason that the South is truly such a fascinating place to live & explore. Essentially, we find strength in our diversity!
