11 signs your partner may be holding in resentment

Everything seems completely fine in your relationship. Until it’s not. Rather than them being mean to you or yelling, something feels off, and you can’t quite put your finger on it. Here are eleven signs that your partner resents you but won’t say it. How many of these have you brushed off like it’s nothing?

They get short with you quickly

Asking something relatively normal, maybe even basic, leads to them snapping. It’s nothing massive. Yet it’s enough anger to make you wonder what’s the cause of it, especially since it’s over stuff that would’ve never bothered them before. Why are they so angry with you?

They avoid shared photos

There’s no reaction whenever you bring up a trip you took or an old photo. No smile & no comments, whatsoever. They don’t even post you on their social media anymore. It’s because they’ve disconnected from the idea of you two together, and that means that the stuff that used to mean something has no weight for them anymore. It’s pretty painful.

They respond politely but don’t add anything

You tell them that your boss said something strange at work, but all you get back is an “oh, weird.” Then it’s silence, with no additional questions or comments. It’s not exactly rude. But it’s definitely a sign that they’ve checked out, whether that’s from the conversation or the relationship as a whole.

They half-do shared tasks

You might notice that they leave the recycling next to the bin, not in it, or they fold laundry, but leave it stacked on the couch. As such, you’re forced to finish the things they could’ve done themselves. It’s not exactly forgetfulness because they’re consistent about it. It’s more that they don’t care anymore.

They only show affection around others

At a party, they’ll put their arm around your waist and share lots of laughs with you. It’s a different story at home. There, the switch flips when the front door closes, as hugs vanish & any sense of touch disappears entirely. Did you just imagine that they cuddled you in public?

They act like spending time with you is a favor

It begins subtly, but they might start to tell you that they could’ve gone out, yet chose to stay in with you. Or maybe they’ll mention that they “guess” they’ll watch the show you picked out for them. You didn’t ask them to do any of this, it’s just that they want you to know that they had other options. They want you to feel grateful that they’re there. That’s not good.

They mention how independent they are

Be wary if your partner suddenly starts saying that they don’t need help with anything anymore, or how they’re doing their own thing now. It’s especially bad when they say it about stuff you used to do together. Rather than confidence, this is a good sign that they’ve created distance between the pair of you. They want you to know they can do a lot of stuff without you. They can survive.

They’re tired whenever you want to talk

As soon as you decide to bring something up, they’re exhausted and need to sleep. You might even want to check in after a long week, but they’ll say “not tonight” and head to bed. Funnily enough, though, they have time for everything else. It’s a selective kind of tiredness that only applies when they want it to.

They stop talking about the long-term

Each time conversations about the future come up, they brush them off or change the topic. In all honesty, they stop getting involved and only give you vague answers. Really, you’re tired of hearing “we’ll see” every time. You’d love for them to actually think about what the future has for the pair of you. There’s no sign that that day’s ever coming, though, no matter how hard you wish for it.

They rush through conversations

During the conversations you do have with them, they’ll immediately say things like “yeah, yeah” or “got it.” And that’s before you’re even halfway through. They’re trying to skip to the end because it’s not something that interests them, and you’re able to feel that they’ve mentally checked out. It hurts.

They’re extra nice after ignoring you

One minute, they’re cold with you, barely saying two words, but the next day is a different story. Suddenly, they begin offering you snacks & asking if you want anything from the store. In fact, you’re not sure if you’re supposed to show gratitude or ask them what the heck is going on. What do they want from you?
