11 Rare Things That Older People Wish Were Still Around

Some things of the past were not just things or places – they were a part of life. They brought people together, simplified everyday activities or added a bit of charm to the world. The older generations tend to reminisce about these little but meaningful parts of their lives. Today things are different and technology has displaced them, but the memories of these precious objects remain in their hearts. Let’s look at some of the things we older adults wished were still around.

Drive-In Theaters

There was something mystical about watching a movie outdoors. Drive-ins weren’t just a place to watch a movie – they were also social gatherings. People brought snacks, children played before the movie started, and couples enjoyed romantic dates in the comfort of their own cars. Movie streaming today is convenient but it doesn’t have the same charming atmosphere as these outdoor cinemas.

In the past, fresh milk came to your door every morning in glass bottles. Milkmen went round, catching up with families while delivering the day’s supply. This was a small daily ritual, creating a sense of community. Milk now arrives in plastic bottles from the supermarket – the milkman no longer delivers. For many old folks, nothing beats the reliability and simplicity of these home deliveries.

Department Store Elegance

Shopping used to be a ritual. Department stores were stylishly set up, and staff were always eager to offer a helping hand. These shops weren’t merely where you bought things – they were places to wander and socialize and enjoy a day out. Online shopping these days is fast and convenient but doesn’t provide person-to-person interaction or the pleasure of stumbling on that special something in a store.

Radio Variety Shows

Before television, radios united the families for night-time fun. Radio variety had comedy, drama, music and news, all in one. Families would sit together and listen to stories that left plenty to the imagination. The elderly recall these shows as moments of connection, with the entire family together.

Neighborhood Soda Fountains

Soda fountains were common in small towns and neighborhoods. They were the spots where children hung out after school, couples went on dates, friends met for ice cream or a cocktail. Its friendly atmosphere and cheap beverages made soda fountains a common part of everyday life. But with fast food chains taking over, this kind of casual, local gathering is scarce now.

Polaroid Cameras

The instant thrill of watching a photograph form before your eyes is quite fascinating.  Polaroid cameras made memories instantaneous and fun. The older generation remember gatherings or vacations where these cameras were passed around, creating keepsakes on the spot. Digital photos today can be edited for hours, but they lack the nostalgia of a Polaroid.

Simple Neighborhood Games

In the days before video games and smartphones, children spent time in their gardens playing. Games such as hopscotch, tag or stickball were a way of life. They were games that kept children active and engaged in communities. Elderly adults miss seeing kids playing outside without using technology. It takes them back to when life was simpler and more connected.

Phone Booths

Phone booths weren’t merely a means of phone communication. They served as a lifeline in case of disaster, as well as a symbol of urbanity. Seniors recall dropping a coin into a payphone and having short but vital conversations. Cell phones have eased the way to communicate, but the disappearance of phone booths in urban areas creates a weird void.

Homemade Remedies

Before pharmacies became so common, households treated all kinds of ailments with home remedies. Grandparents passed down teas, poultices and natural balms made from the kitchen or garden. Older generations appreciated this expertise, which seemed personal and traditional. But now, medicine is advanced, but they miss the simplicity and trust in these treatments.

Respect for Elders

Once elders were regarded as knowledgeable and revered. Youngsters listened to them and asked them for counsel. There are still families who cherish this tradition, but the older generation has mostly become alienated in our modern fast-paced society. They wish they lived in a time when their experience was valued and their opinions heard.

Handwritten Letters

Emails and texts have taken the place of letters, but nothing can touch the emotion of a handwritten letter. The letter was an investment of time and labor and, perhaps, brimming with personal information. It was more intimate and thoughtful to receive a letter than an email. The old generation misses the excitement of pulling open an envelope, unfolding the sheet and reading carefully written words.
