Before having kids, there are lots of things in life that we consider to be important. But once you have kids, your priorities change completely. Many of those things that seemed to be the most important to you suddenly fall by the wayside, and some things that never seemed to matter become more important than ever before.
It’s not that you stop caring about your body, your work, your private life, or your hobbies; it’s just that, with kids, the priorities change a bit, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Let’s take a look at 14 priorities that suddenly change after you become a parent.

Sleep

Before kids, you might’ve pulled all-nighters or stayed up late for fun. After kids? You dream about uninterrupted sleep like it’s the greatest luxury on earth.
Private time

You never realized how much you actually enjoyed having some time to yourself until little people start following you around everywhere, even to the bathroom.
Career

Work used to be the most important thing in your life? Now you just hope you get to keep a job you kind of like, with a flexible schedule and zero guilt-trip-factor when you have to be with your family.
Money

Before, you could use that next bonus to buy a plane ticket to go on vacation, treat yourself to a fancy new gadget, or spend an entire day with your friends. After kids, it’s all about saving for diapers, daycare, and any number of other expenses you didn’t even know existed.
Your health

Before kids, you had to have six-pack abs to be happy. Now you just care about not being the most out-of-shape parent at the playground, so you can keep up with your kid and not get a cramp when it’s their turn to climb the jungle gym.
Social life

Your social life is one of the first things to change when you become parents. You go from “let’s hang out all weekend!” to “let’s plan something three weeks from now… maybe… if I’m not too tired.”
Furniture

Before kids, you always bought the nicest furniture you could find, with all the little embellishments, and made to last a long time. Now you just look for what can survive a child under the age of 2 climbing all over it without collapsing or breaking.
Dating your partner

Date nights used to be spontaneous. After kids, it’s a big deal just to sit on the couch and watch a show together without either of you falling asleep.
Personal interests

The hours you used to spend on hobbies? If you’re really lucky, you’ll have a few stolen moments of “me time” to squeeze in here and there; otherwise, you will have to postpone it until the kids are bigger.
Patience

You thought you were patient before. But nothing tests patience like a toddler who refuses to wear pants or eat anything but crackers.
Vacations

Vacations are no longer about sitting around in the sun and sipping fruity drinks, or testing your limits on some wild adventure. After you have kids, your new family vacation is all about whether or not it’s kid-friendly and how many snacks you need to bring.
Friends

Your old friendships will naturally die out over time. You’ll be more inclined to make friends with people who are in a similar situation as you and accept it if they cancel at the last minute, because they have to take care of a sick kid.
Success

Success used to mean having great achievements or recognition for your work. But now it can also be measured by whether or not you were able to feed, dress, and keep everyone alive for one more day.
Being happy

You never realized how things that made you happy could change so drastically – a child’s belly laugh, a few stolen moments with a quiet cup of coffee, or just one day where no one lost their temper. These things can feel like more luxury than money can buy.
