13 phrases many Millennials and Gen Z don’t like

Each generation has its own vibe, and older generations often make remarks that unintentionally offend younger generations. If you’ve ever gotten a blank expression or a questioning look from a Millennial or Gen Z person, you probably used one of these phrases. You may see these expressions as completely normal but younger generations see them differently. They might see these expressions as old-fashioned, insulting or simply irritating. Here are 13 phrases to avoid unless you want to give the impression you’ve traveled back from the 1990s.

“Back In My Day…”

The “back in my day” phrase immediately creates a setup for an extended rant that ends with “…and we liked it that way!” Millennials and Gen Z might like hearing stories but they don’t want to be compared with a past they don’t relate to. The use of this phrase usually feels like an indirect way of making someone feel guilty for the way things are now or saying that times were better before their arrival.

“You’re Too Sensitive”

When someone says another person is too sensitive, they imply that their emotions have no value. Labeling people as too sensitive ends meaningful discussions and forces them to feel as if their emotions are exaggerated. Younger generations have learned to see mental health discussions and emotional awareness as forms of strength instead of weakness.

“That’s Not a Real Job”

Just because something did not exist twenty years ago doesn’t mean it’s not valid. Roles like social media managers and content creators on platforms like YouTube and Twitch are real jobs with real salaries. If you don’t believe this, this only shows your lack of understanding about modern reality.

“You’re Always On Your Phone”

Phones aren’t just for scrolling — they’re for work, relationships, bills, and even therapy these days. This phrase makes it seem like people are lazy or antisocial when really, they’re often doing life through that screen. Plus, let’s be honest — everyone uses their phone a lot, not just Gen Z.

“You Need To Buy A House”

Easier said than done. Home prices are sky-high but salaries remain the same – this makes buying a house more of a dream than a practical goal. Millennials and Gen Z want to buy property but they also don’t want to take on decades of debt.

“Why Don’t You Just Call Instead Of Texting?”

Calling feels intense to a lot of people now. Texting gives time to think, avoids awkward small talk, and doesn’t demand your full attention. It’s not that they hate talking, it’s just that texting fits their pace and lifestyle better.

“You’ll Change Your Mind When You’re Older”

This phrase might sound wise, but it comes off as dismissive. It suggests that someone’s current thoughts or values aren’t real or valid, just temporary nonsense. People want to be taken seriously now, not told to wait until they’re older for their voice to count.

“Nobody Wants To Work Anymore”

The phrase feels especially painful to those managing multiple jobs and side gigs while battling burnout. Gen Z and Millennials are working but they actively express their need for fair pay and boundaries. Just because they’re challenging their work doesn’t mean they are being lazy.

“That’s Not How We Used To Do It”

Cool, but times change. Younger people often look for more efficient, creative, or inclusive ways to do things. Saying this just makes you sound stuck in your ways and kind of anti-progress.

“You’re Addicted To Social Media”

Social media can definitely be a time-suck, but it’s also a tool for connection, learning, activism, and even income. For younger generations, it’s where life happens — not just cat memes and dance trends. Criticizing it can feel like criticizing them.

“Participation Trophies Ruined Everything”

Let’s be honest: adults were the ones responsible for giving out those awards. The majority of Millennials and members of Gen Z understand the difference between winning and just participating. The argument that trophies are to blame for everything fails to address the root causes.

“You Can’t Expect Everything To Be Handed To You”

This phrase assumes entitlement, but most young people today are hustling hard just to stay afloat. They’re not asking for freebies; they’re asking for opportunities, fairness, and basic dignity. Saying this just makes it sound like you don’t believe in their effort.

“In The Real World…”

The phrase suggests their lives aren’t real and shows them as playing pretend. They face real-world issues such as housing costs, debt, work pressure and global crises. Yeah, that’s as real as it gets. The world appears different from how it used to look yet remains as real and challenging as before.
