People Stop Going to Church Because of These 12 Things

Going to church has been a big part of life for many Americans for a really long time. But lately, more of us have decided not to go. It’s not just one thing that’s causing this change—many factors have made people avoid the pews. So, let’s look at 12 specific things that have made people think twice about going to church on Sunday.

Feeling a Disconnect with Church Leaders

Sometimes, the people leading the church are hard to relate to—or they don’t really get what’s going on in your life. This makes the whole church experience feel a bit cold. If church leaders seem too distant or like they’re on a totally different page, it’s difficult to feel like you’re part of the community.

Church Feels Like a Time Capsule

For some, walking into a church feels like stepping back in time—and not in a good way. They believe the services & messages haven’t kept up with the times so they struggle to see how it fits into their life today. It’s especially bad for younger people. They feel like the church isn’t speaking their language or addressing the things they care about.

Sticking Too Rigidly to the Rules

A church that sticks tightly to its rules leaves no room for questions or different opinions—which feels suffocating. Life changes and people’s beliefs can shift. If the church isn’t open to some flexibility or discussion, it pushes away people who are looking for a place where their views are welcome.

Cliques and Politics Inside the Church

Nobody likes feeling left out or judged and especially not in a place that’s supposed to focus on community & coming together. Any obvious cliques make the entire church experience feel more like high school than a welcoming community. After all, it’s hard enough trying to understand the challenges of everyday life without having to deal with them in an unsafe & non-inclusive religious space.

Scandals and Bad Behavior

It’s really hard to stay committed to a church when scandals break out. Trust is a huge part of faith and when that’s broken, it’s hard to find your way back to feeling good about being part of the church. This goes beyond just feeling disappointed. People feel completely betrayed by those they looked up to for moral & spiritual guidance.

Not Feeling Supported During Tough Times (Replace this photo)

Church is supposed to be a place where you can find support when you’re going through something hard. When people feel like they’re not getting the help they need, they start to wonder why they’re going at all. They feel isolated—so they leave to find the help they’re looking for.

Seeing Hypocrisy

Any differences between what the church preaches and how its members actually act are quite off-putting. Of course, nobody’s perfect—but seeing too much “do as I say, not as I do” behavior makes people question the sincerity of the whole thing. Any consistent patterns of behavior that go against the core teachings of the church are too hypocritical for some people to deal with.

Too Much Focus on Money

Naturally, churches need money to keep the lights on & do their work. However, many people are turned off when every message is about giving more money—and it’s particularly bad if people are struggling financially yet still feel pressured to give more than they can afford. To them, the church is more of a business than a place of worship.

Boring or Non-Existent Programs for Kids and Teens

Parents want their kids to grow up with a strong sense of community & values yet not all churches offer something interesting for them. Families start skipping services if their kids dread going every week. They want their children to get something valuable out of the experience, something that speaks to them on their level so they can grow. Not all churches have this.

Not Welcoming to Newcomers

First impressions matter. If someone’s new to a church and they don’t feel welcomed or they have a bad experience, chances are they’re not coming back. Instead, churches need to be open & friendly to newcomers in a way that goes beyond just saying “hello.” They need to make an effort to include new faces in conversation and show genuine interest in them as individuals.

Clashing Over Social Issues

People have strong feelings about a lot of social issues—and sometimes, those feelings don’t line up with what their church is preaching. Such a huge disconnect on things like reproductive rights or immigration forces people to choose between their personal beliefs & their church community. Sometimes, they’ll choose the former.

Feeling the Service is Too Long or Unengaging

Let’s face it—attention spans aren’t what they used to be. Any church service that feels like it drags on forever makes people think about all the other things they could be doing with their time. We have to make engaging sermons that connect with people’s lives & shorter, more focused services. This way, people’s minds will quit wandering halfway through!
