12 Myths About the ‘Good Old Days’ Debunked

Nostalgia has a way of making us think that the past was oh-so-great. In fact, you’ve probably said things were better “back in the day” many times before. But was life really better or are we all just wearing rose-colored glasses when we look back? Yes, some things seemed simple. However, that doesn’t mean they were actually better across the board. Here are twelve myths about the “good old days” that prove they weren’t as great as we remember.

Food Was Always Organic and Healthier

You might think that the past was a time when all food was fresh off the farm & completely pure. But just because it was organic doesn’t mean it was safer or healthier. Back then, they didn’t have today’s food safety standards and people contracted foodborne illnesses far more often. Today, we have a bigger variety of nutritious foods. You can get them from anywhere in the world.

The Economy Was More Stable

The economy wasn’t all that simple either. For example, the Great Depression is a great example of how things could—and did—go south fast. People back then didn’t have the safeguards we do now. We have insurance on bank deposits—they didn’t. They felt the economic bumps a lot harder than we would today.

Crime Rates Were Lower

Many people believe that the streets were safer & crime was less of a thing in the good old days. However, crime rates have gone up and down over the years. In some cases, things were just as bad—if not worse. What’s changed for the better is how we handle and prevent crime now. We’re also better at reporting crime, too.

Education Was Better Quality

Some people think that education used to be better and everyone had the best learning experiences. Not true! It was hit or miss, depending on where you lived & how much money you had. More people are pushing for fairer access to good education these days. And let’s not forget the power of the internet. Learning has never been more accessible. You can pick up a new skill from anywhere in the world—that just wasn’t possible back in the day.

Children Were Safer and More Independent

We often hear how kids used to roam free & everything was fine. However, that’s not the whole truth. We didn’t used to talk about a lot of dangers, nor did we recognize them. Thankfully, we’re way more clued in about keeping kids safe now. We have a far greater awareness of the risks and we have technology on our side to help protect our little ones. Kids weren’t necessarily safer back then.

Communities Were Closer-Knit

It’s easy to think everyone knew their neighbors and looked out for each other more in the past. While communities were smaller, that doesn’t mean they were always welcoming—or supportive. Today, we have more ways to connect with people who share our interests. It doesn’t really matter what you’re into—gardening, gaming, or anything in between. You can find your tribe online!

The Environment Was Pristine

Are you longing for the days when the earth was untouched and pollution wasn’t a thing? Then you’ll have to travel back several millennia! Deforestation & industrial waste have been problems for a long time and we’re just now getting serious about fixing them. More people are aware of the impact their choices have on the planet. As such, we’re putting in more effort to do better by Mother Nature.

People Were Happier

Even though it seems like people were “just happier” back in the day, it’s not entirely true. For starters, you can’t measure happiness and every era has its challenges. Yes, modern life is stressful. But we have a lot of perks they didn’t have back then, like entertainment at our fingertips & ways to connect with loved ones across the globe instantly. We also have more control over our lives and careers.

Work-Life Balance Was Better

It’s wrong to think that people had a greater work-life balance in the past. Many people worked incredibly long hours (often in awful conditions) and without the benefits we have today. Weekends off & vacation time? That was a foreign concept to them. Of course there’s still work to do but we’ve become far more aware of how important having a work-life balance is.

Social Norms Were Better for Relationships

Some people believe relationships were stronger when everyone stuck to traditional roles. Yet those roles were rather restrictive. They didn’t leave much room for personal choice—or happiness. These days, people care more about equality & communication in relationships. We’re free to define our relationships in ways that work best for us. Outdated expectations mean nothing!

Diseases Were Less of a Concern

Despite what you might’ve heard, diseases have always been an issue. Before vaccines & modern treatments, diseases like smallpox and polio were huge problems. They created widespread fear and devastated communities. The difference today is that we have the means to prevent and treat many of these diseases. Yes, health issues still exist. But we’re actually in a much better spot than our ancestors were.

Everyone Was More Polite Back Then

Were people nicer & more polite in the past? Probably not. Rudeness & bad manners aren’t new inventions and people have been complaining about the younger generation’s lack of manners for centuries. Even in the fourth century BC, Plato claimed that young people disrespected their elders! The difference is that it’s easy to see people being rude these days, thanks to social media & the internet.
