You probably know that the business world is corrupt but do you realize how serious this problem is? It’s everywhere – thankfully, some giants have been caught red-handed. Here are ten of them! Some of these businesses bribed their way to success, while others took part in some dodgy dealings. Either way, business clearly isn’t always just business.

A Billion-Dollar Bribe Bonanza

Siemens has been part of numerous bribery scandals, including a scheme where officials bribed the Argentine government to get a $1 billion contract. Eventually, they had to pay over $1.6 billion in fines and it left a permanent mark on their record. It just goes to show how far some companies will go to get ahead.
Emissions Omissions

Volkswagen took a major hit to its reputation with the Dieselgate scandal in 2015. Essentially, they rigged their diesel engines to pass emissions tests while actually pumping out pollutants way over the legal limits. Beyond being bad for the environment, it was a betrayal of customers & governments alike. The result? A $4.3 billion fine.

From Energy to Emptiness

Talk about a spectacular downfall. Enron became synonymous with corporate fraud after its 2001 collapse as it cheated its books to hide billions in debt. The company fooled everyone—until it couldn’t anymore. The fallout was massive & led to huge changes in U.S. financial laws.
Brazil’s Billion-Dollar Blowout

In 2014, Brazilian oil giant Petrobras was at the center of a corruption saga that involved bribery & price fixing to win contracts. The scandal later cost the company billions and also revealed how corrupt Brazil’s political scene was. After all, the corruption involved both politicians & business leaders.
Mixing Business with Bribery

The Canadian engineering firm SNC-Lavalin was accused of bribing officials in Libya to secure contracts. The scandal entangled even the highest levels of Canadian politics—one report claims that the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, broke ethics laws. The case has been largely settled although some officials have said there should be more investigations.
Fast Tracking Expansion

Walmart was accused of bribing Mexican officials to speed up store openings and cement its dominance in the market. Reports from 2012 indicate that the grocery giant paid up to $24 million in dubious dealings in other countries. Later, they were fined $282 million for this. Was it worth it?
The Price of Precious Commodities

Glencore, the massive Swiss trading and mining company, has faced numerous allegations over the years. These include bribing officials in different countries to lock down deals on minerals & other commodities. In 2022, the organization pled guilty to charges and agreed to pay more than $1 billion in penalties.
Costly Corruption

Despite being the world’s largest maker of generic drugs, Teva Pharmaceutical was caught up in a corruption case involving illegal payments in Ukraine, Mexico & Russia. Why? Because they apparently paid to push their products. The case was eventually settled in 2024 with a penalty of $450 million. Ouch!
Banking on Bad Behavior

In 2012, HSBC was fined a whopping $1.9 billion for facilitating money laundering, including for drug cartels. This figure became one of the largest fines for a bank in America. Apparently, the bank had engaged in money laundering of over $881 million and also took part in illegal transactions across the world.
Manipulating the Market

Barclays is a global financial services company that helped manipulate the LIBOR, a benchmark interest rate that affects loans & finances worldwide. The scandal came to light in 2012 and involved a group of banks. They were forced to pay £59.5 million, which is approximately $113 million today.
