My grandma has a lot to say about the self-checkout machine. -“They never work right” or “Just always need someone to fix them anyway.” She’ll tell us every time we go to the store, “Why can’t they just get more cashiers? This machine isn’t fooling anybody!” I think she’s on to something — sometimes all this “automation” is just a hassle!
Have you ever noticed that some “upgrades” can be hard rather than smooth? Here are 10 “smart upgrades” that probably sounded great on paper but, I promise, only made things worse.

Touchscreen Controls in Cars

Cars got touchscreens so they look cool and modern — and they are more of a pain than a pleasure. Compared to buttons, touchscreens are more difficult to use when driving, sometimes freeze or fail, and are distracting when you’re on the move.
Subscription-Based Software and Products

A lot of software and products these days require subscriptions rather than single payments. This means you are paying month after month or year after year for something you only bought once. It’s awesome for businesses but it’s like you pay for the same thing, again and again, without getting much extra.

Smart Home Appliances with Apps

Smart fridges and ovens are fantasies but they’re also headaches. A lot have to be updated regularly, and a lot cease to function when the app is no longer available. Rather than simplifying our lives, such “smart” gadgets sometimes end up only creating more technical stress.
Digital-Only Customer Support

Helping yourself is now mainly done via the internet with chatbots and FAQs instead of human beings. This is OK for most questions, but it gets annoying if you’ve got a real issue and just need a human.
Cameras on Everything

And now everything has a camera – laptops, doorbells, fridges. They’re handy for security purposes, but they raise privacy issues. Many of us are scared of being hacked or tapped, so even simple devices pose privacy concerns we didn’t have before.
Too Many Streaming Services

With all these streaming services now you need to get multiple subscriptions to watch every show you want. It’s like cable all over again, but more scattered—and the costs add up fast.
Voice Assistants that Misinterpret Commands

Voice assistants are supposed to simplify our lives, but they don’t always do it right. They misunderstand commands, twitch out of the blue, and get annoying quickly. They just don’t work the way they ought to.
Self-Checkout Machines

Self-checkout machines often have scanning issues, so customers still need help from a worker. Instead of speeding things up, they end up slowing people down, and that is not what they are supposed to do.
Complex Smartphone Camera System

Some phones now support several camera settings for “pro” shots, and those settings are confusing. It’s harder to shoot quickly when you have to flip between lenses, adjust settings, and figure out all the modes. Not everyone requires all these — they just want the simple picture.
Social Media “Flux” That Threatens Mental Health

Social media continues to roll out things such as likes, reactions, and algorithmic content — and these just make it worse. They fuel comparison, FOMO (fear of missing out), and even disinformation. For many, these updates have reduced social media to something less and less fun.
