8 common mistakes when choosing a pet

Choosing a pet is a big decision. Many people rush into it excitedly. But a simple mistake can cause problems later on. You could end up with a pet that does not fit too well into your life if you do not plan this smartly.

In this list, we discuss 8 of the most common mistakes that people make when they are selecting a new pet. Steer clear of these to make sure your home is a happier one for both you and your pet.

Not Researching the Breed

Most people choose pets based on looks. However, every breed has its own special requirements. There are dogs who need a lot of exercise, and others that are relatively easy going. Like dogs, cats can also have unique personalities. If you don’t know what you’re getting into, your pet may not fit your lifestyle.

Ignoring the Pet’s Lifespan

Different pets have different life spans. For example, hamsters only live a few years, while parrots and tortoises live decades. A lot of people fail to consider the life of their pets. If you’re not ready to be in it for the long haul, then you may not be ready to own a pet, especially as your pet will grow older and need more care.

Underestimating Time Commitment

Pets, especially dogs, need daily attention and care. Even other pets like cats, birds, and small animals need looking after every day. If you are working until late and have little time for a pet, it’s probably not the best idea to adopt one right now. This would result in either behavioral problems or a sad and lonely pet.

Not Considering Space

Sometimes, people adopt pets without considering their living situations. Big dogs need enough room to run and play. Cats need space to explore, hide, and climb. An active pet might not be well-suited for a tiny apartment. A pet could feel cramped in a home that is too small.

Choosing Based on Trends

Movies and popular shows or social media make pets trendy from time to time. You don’t want to get a pet just because it is trendy. When these trends die out, you have yourself a pet that does not match your lifestyle. Choose a pet based on your ability to look after it.

Overlooking Costs

Some people forget that owning a pet can be expensive. The costs of food, grooming, toys and vet visits can add up quickly. Some breeds or some pets have unique health issues and as a result, need more vet visits. If you do not plan for these, it can cause stress. If you cannot afford this responsibility, do NOT get a pet.

Forgetting About Allergies

Sometimes, people forget how common pet allergies actually are. Animal dander (particles of skin and fur or feathers) often cause sneezing, itching, and even asthma. Some people get a pet without checking for allergies first. This may result in the pet needing to be rehomed, which can be a lot of stress for all.

Not Considering the Pet’s Energy Level

High energy pets need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Having a pet with more energy than you can handle means trouble. Dogs might chew your furniture and cats might become destructive. So pick a pet whose energy matches your own so they stay happy and healthy.
