Buying a pet is easy, right? You see cute animals online and imagine cuddles and cute clips. But reality hits once they’re home and living with you every day. Here are 13 common misconceptions pet owners confess they had, and honestly, most of us can relate.

“I’ll train them quickly and easily”

Many pet owners thought house training would be a weekend project. Instead, it takes months (years) of reminders, patience, and bribing with treats.
“They’ll get along with other pets right away”

Lots of people expected the second pet to love their current pet immediately. In reality, it’s usually a slow process with lots of hissing/circling/barking.
“It’ll be cheaper than I think”

Pet owners say they massively underestimated the costs of food, vet, toys, and emergencies. That “free” adoption ends up being a monthly expense in your budget.
“They won’t need that much attention”

Some people thought pets could sit quietly all day. But dogs, cats, and even small animals need more interaction, play, and time with you than you’d expect.
“I can easily travel with them”

A lot of owners said they believed could just take their pet in the car or on a plane. But traveling with pets turns out to be expensive, stressful, and full of restrictions/paperwork.
“A small pet will be less work”

They thought hamsters, fish, rabbits, and other small pets were super low-maintenance. But tiny animals have fragile bodies, special care routines, and a lot of clean-up!
“I won’t mind the fur and mess”

At first, they laughed off the shedding and mess. But it takes a few months to realize pet hair is literally everywhere, and cleaning becomes part of your routine.
“Vet visits are only for when they’re sick”

Some owners figured they could only take their pet to the vet when sick/injured. Later, they realized regular check-ups, vaccines, and preventive care are important (and pricey!)
“I’ll sleep just fine with a pet”

They pictured themselves coddling their new pet and cozily falling asleep. In reality, they often wake you up with pawing/licking/meowing and hog all the covers.
“Cats are totally independent”

A lot of first-time cat owners thought cats are aloof and take care of themselves. In reality, many cats are highly social and require as much attention as dogs.
“One walk a day is enough for a dog”

Owners thought a short morning walk would keep their dog entertained. Turns out many dogs require much more exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation.
“They’ll grow out of bad behavior”

They thought things like chewing, jumping, or scratching would magically go away with age. But most pets will continue bad habits without training.
“My pet will be just like my last one”

People who’d had pets before said they knew what to expect. But all animals have their own quirks and surprises that make them unique.
