12 Little Quirks We All Pretend We Don’t Have

I have this weird habit of double-checking my car door. Every time, I’ll just walk away & then turn back to make extra sure. My mind knows that I already locked it, but does my brain accept it? Absolutely not! I think these strange little habits are part of everyone’s life & they are there for a reason. In this list, I’ll share with you 12 of them & let’s be honest—you might probably be doing some of them too.

Pretending You Know the Lyrics

Sometimes when I hear a familiar song, I decide to sing along, even though I only know a couple of words. Does it make me stop? Nope. I just end up mumbling the rest of the lyrics like a pro or just humming along.

The Traffic Light Sprint

Whenever you’re walking down the street, don’t you feel the need to rush to cross before the light turns red? There might be no real reason to hurry, but it feels like an Olympic marathon where we try to beat the system (even though we might only have a few seconds to do so).

The Great Lock Check

You may go back to the front door, stove & windows to double-check them. Even though you know the first check was enough, you take this extra step to convince your mind no irrational disaster is going to happen while you are asleep or out of home.

Rearranging Items in Store Shelves

Maybe you’re not even buying anything, but you find it so satisfying to organize shelves that look chaotic. You might line up chocolate bars, organize perfume bottles by size, or push abandoned carts back into their place. This might give you a sense of control that you secretly enjoy.

Dodging Sidewalk Cracks

The childhood rhyme “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back” sticks with many of us, even if we don’t actually believe it. You may find yourself jumping over sidewalk cracks, either out of habit or without even thinking.

Getting Lost in the Scroll

Do you also find yourself diving into Instagram or Pinterest for dinner table decor ideas or the latest dress designs? We convince ourselves that we’re researching or collecting ideas (things we’re ‘interested in’ or ‘might use one day’), while deep down, we know we’re just wasting our time scrolling up & down.

Making Faces at Your Reflection

Many people end up making silly faces when they look at themselves in the mirror. Whether we’re trying out a new look or just having fun, we all experience this playful moment, but most of us don’t talk about it.

Overthinking That Text

Someone sends a simple “Okay,” & now you’re analyzing it like it’s a secret code. Are they annoyed? Are they mad? Should you have added an emoji? The overthinking battle begins inside your mind while you pretend not to care.

Texting Yourself Like It’s Normal

I text myself all the time to keep track of grocery lists, appointment reminders, & important ideas. Some people find this habit weird, but for me, it’s an easy, practical way to save information for later.

Eating in “The” Order

I always start my meals with the food I like least & save the best for last. And I have noticed how my sister eats all her veggies before the main course. This is a personal system we create to make the best bite last longer or avoid finishing our meals too quickly (but we rarely talk about it).

Leaving That Empty Box for “Later”

We’ve all thrown an empty soda can or milk bottle in the recycling bin, thinking we’ll empty it later. Most of the time, this ‘later’ never comes because we’re too lazy or just forget. So, these recyclables just sit there in the bin, even though we spot them every single day.
