Embracing the Gig Economy

Many millennials are working gig jobs instead of sticking to traditional 9-to-5 jobs—they enjoy the flexibility that comes with freelancing & short-term contracts. You’ll see so many of them managing their own schedules and working from different locations, like coffee shops or co-working spaces! Yet boomers usually prefer long-term employment with one company because they believe it’s better for job security and steady career progression.
Prioritizing Experiences Over Possessions

A lot of millennials prefer to spend money on experiences like travel & concerts because they value making memories—like backpacking across Europe or attending music festivals. Boomers, though, will invest their money in physical items such as homes & cars and that’s mostly because they have the money to do so! They see owning property and assets as milestones of success & security that are well worth paying for.
Adopting Sustainable Living Practices

Living sustainably is very important for most millennials and that’s why they’ll use renewable energy and try to minimize waste by reducing single-use plastics. This includes doing things like composting, biking instead of driving and supporting eco-friendly brands as opposed to those that hurt the environment. Boomers often maintain traditional consumption habits without focusing as much on environmental impact since going green is relatively new for them.

Delaying Marriage and Parenthood

It’s no secret that many millennials are choosing to marry & have children later in life—their focus is on achieving education and personal goals before settling down. That’s quite different from boomers who generally married & started families at a younger age, often in their early twenties. While the average boomer got married around 20-23, the majority of millennials do so when they’re around 30 years old.
Preferring Urban Living and Walkability

Young people usually prefer living in urban areas with access to amenities & public transportation, so they’ll choose to live in apartments over houses. However, boomers usually choose suburban or rural living because they value their space & privacy—and having a quieter environment. Owning a house with a yard was a goal for them and they did everything they could to achieve that!
Relying on Digital Communication

For many Millennials, texting & social media are primary ways to communicate so they’ll use platforms like Facebook and messaging apps to stay connected. Video calls and emails are also common in both personal and professional settings for them, too! But boomers typically favor more traditional methods like phone calls or face-to-face conversations as they see them as being more genuine.
Engaging in Online Learning

Millennials were probably the quickest generation to utilize online courses & digital resources for education and self-improvement, which often involves taking classes on platforms like Coursera. They might even watch tutorial videos on YouTube as they’re big believers in using the internet to learn new skills. Yet boomers are more inclined toward traditional classroom settings and printed materials because, for them, physical learning is much more effective.
Supporting Plant-Based Diets

There’s a growing trend among Millennials to adopt plant-based diets for health & ethical reasons, so they’ll choose meat alternatives or participate in Meatless Mondays. On the other hand, boomers generally stick to more traditional diets that include meat because they think it’s more ‘natural’ and better for their bodies. Who would’ve thought something as simple as food could be so divisive for these different generations?!
Investing in Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrencies sure are a young person’s game—and for lots of millennials, they’re a big part of their investment strategies and so they’ll buy Bitcoin or Ethereum. They see the potential in digital assets and online trading platforms make it easy for them to get involved. Yet boomers prefer traditional investment vehicles like stocks and bonds, mostly because they think cryptocurrencies are far too risky.
Using Ridesharing Services

Rather than owning cars, many Millennials frequently use ridesharing apps like Uber & Lyft for transportation—they might also utilize bike-sharing or public transit. Such an approach saves them money on car payments and insurance, as well as maintenance. But boomers usually own personal vehicles because they associate car ownership with independence & convenience. Having a car in the driveway was just the norm for them.
Choosing Remote Work

Many boomers prefer the structure of working in an office environment since they appreciate the routine and face-to-face interactions that come with a traditional workplace. Alternatively, lots of millennials think remote work opportunities are better because they give them more flexibility, which is great for their work-life balance. Younger people are experts at using Zoom & Slack to stay connected with colleagues!
Participating in Fitness Trends

Fitness trends like CrossFit & boutique fitness classes are quite popular among millennials—they might join classes that give them a community experience where they try the latest workout craze. But that’s not necessarily true for older boomers who focus on more conventional forms of exercise like walking or golfing. They may not prioritize fitness in the same way or they might simply prefer activities that are less intense since their bodies are older.
