9 interests that can hurt relationships if overdone

Building strong relationships is important for your emotional health, but some of your interests might get in the way of relationships without you even realizing it. Although these interests might be entertaining or innocent, they can easily isolate you from others. Read on for 9 things you’re doing that can take away from you connecting with people on a deeper level.

You’re Obsessed With Gaming

Spending too much time on video games can make it hard to connect with other people. You may have fun exploring virtual worlds but this will pull you away from real-life conversations and experiences. Even if you make friends in your video game, they are not the same as real-life friends.

Social Media

Social media can be addictive. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or Twitter are made to let you feel connected to others. But those connections lack depth. You might feel that you are staying in touch, when in fact all that swiping and posting can keep you from having deep, meaningful conversations with people around you.

Fitness Obsession

Being too obsessed with health and fitness can turn people away. People may think you are not interested in them beyond their calorie content. If every word out of your mouth is exercise and health related, people can get sick of it pretty fast.

Over-Obsessing About Work

When you are a workaholic, other relationships can take a back seat. Constantly talking about your job or working long hours at the office leave little room to connect with others. As you become too focused on deadlines, meetings and promotions, you might even seem emotionally unavailable.

Political Activism

It’s good to care about politics but if politics is the only thing you can talk about, it gets tiring. It might create distance, especially if people don’t share your views. It is easy for your activism to overshadow all of your personal relationships and you can lose connection with most people on a human level.

Solo Hobbies

Solo hobbies (like reading, writing, or painting) are rewarding in their own way. But if you spend all your time on them, it leaves little room for shared experiences with others. You may end up feeling disconnected from people who want to bond over mutual interests.

Being a Perfectionist

Perfectionism can affect your relationships more than you think. When you are constantly expecting everything to be perfect, you actually push people away. It puts you under pressure to not relax or have fun, and others may feel that they are unable to match your high standards.

Prioritizing Travel Over People

Traveling is an awesome way of life but it puts your relationships under strain. When you are always on vacation or out of town, it is hard for you to maintain strong connections. It could leave friends and loved ones feeling neglected.

Being a Movie Buff

Being a movie buff is fine, but when it becomes your only passion, then it may actually prevent you from interacting. If you’re always critiquing films or rewatching your favorites alone, it may prevent you from spending quality time with others. This may also prevent you from having meaningful conversations about anything else.
