I’m Over 60, and I’m Saying “No” to These 10 New Norms

Life is a lot different these days, and not everything is better. Some of these new norms that people embrace today just do not make any sense to me. Whether it’s staying glued to a phone, chasing the latest trends, or overcomplicating things, I’ve decided to take a step back. Now, I’m at a stage in my life where I know what works for me and am not afraid to say “no” to what doesn’t. So here are 10 modern habits I’ve given up, and why I am happier for it.

Constantly Being Online

Everywhere you look, everyone is on their phones. Social media, emails and constant messages are now taking over. It’s not like there’s any time away from connectivity. I’ve decided to take a breather and limit my online time. Instead of scrolling, I read, or garden, or go on walks. It’s a better life not tied to a screen – I don’t miss it as much as I thought I would.

Streaming Over Owning

Everything’s now available via streaming — films, music & even books. It’s convenient but it’s not the same as owning something real. I love the experience of opening an old photo album, holding a book, or playing a record. Streaming only brings you temporary pleasure, but physical things bring back memories. So that’s why sticking to keeping the things that makes me feel better and happy.

Fast Fashion Trends

Fashion changes so quickly now, with new designs come out every season. But it doesn’t make sense to me to pay for clothes that rip apart after a few uses. I’d rather have a few good pieces that last years. Good shoes or a nice cardigan never go out of fashion. It also saves you money over the long-term and eliminates waste.

Sharing Every Detail of Life Online

People share everything on social media – what they eat, where they go, even their personal struggles. But some moments, I think, ought to remain private. I don’t have to publish every thought and every photo. I rather focus on being present with my family and friends. Privacy is a treasure when everyone is oversharing.

Overloaded Schedules

Staying busy is the best way to deal with grief.

It seems like being busy all the time is something to brag about. But running frantically from one thing to the next isn’t my thing anymore. I have learnt to slow down and live quietly. I “no” plans that I don’t need and leave room for rest. I know less is more, whether it’s coffee on the porch or family time.

Replacing Real Connections with Virtual Ones

Video conferencing and text messaging is now the new norm of staying in touch. That’s all well and good sometimes, but it’s not as good as sitting down with someone in person. I would rather talk to someone for a good few minutes over coffee than hours in front of a screen. The real human connection is better and I’m not willing to give up that for convenience.

Overcomplicating Health Trends

There are always new fads in health — fancy diets, expensive supplements & fitness apps. It’s overwhelming and often unnecessary. I keep things simple – such as balanced meals, exercise, sleep. Good health doesn’t have to be expensive and I don’t have time for the latest fads.

Always Upgrading Technology

Every year there is a new phone, laptop or device that promises to be better than the last. But always upgrading is expensive and pointless. If what I have works, I don’t change. Technology does not have to be the focal point of my life – I don’t have to be up to speed with each and every release.

Over-the-Top Celebrations

Simple celebrations have been replaced by extravagant parties and events. Every event from baby showers to birthdays, has become a show now.  I have come to appreciate little gatherings with my best friends and family. It doesn’t matter how big or expensive the party is – what really matters is the people you are sharing it with.

Chasing Youth

Everyone feels like they’re supposed to be young and resist ageing with expensive products and procedures. I’ve embraced growing older and the wisdom that comes with it. Gray hair and wrinkles are normal, and I’m not ashamed of them. My goal isn’t to be young but to be healthy, happy & authentic.
