At My Age, I Can’t Believe People Are Spending Money on These 10 Things

We become more conscious of saving and spending as we age. Sometimes, you buy things because they’re pretty or exciting and end up spending all of your money on them. There is nothing wrong with spoiling yourself, but there are things that aren’t really worth the price. Here are ten things that make me wonder why anyone would spend their hard-earned money on them.

Designer Water Bottles

You wouldn’t believe how much people would spend on branded water bottles. Some bottles cost as much as a decent dinner because they have a cool label, or a unique design. But the reality is, they just hold water, which any disposable or cheap bottle will do. Worse yet, most of these bottles end up in the landfill where they are part of waste. A simple reusable bottle of tap or filtered water saves money and good for the planet.

Trendy Diet Fads

New diets come and go, but they’re never cheap. People buy high-priced diets, powders, supplements and even equipment in order to stay on top of the trend. Those diets are usually unsuccessful and the money is wasted. Simple healthy eating (such as preparing your meals yourself with fresh produce) is healthier and much cheaper. Plus, you don’t have to worry about enforcing rules that are difficult to follow in the long run.

Overpriced Coffee Drinks

Coffee shops are everywhere, and so are the costly beverages that they serve. If you pay $7 or more per coffee every day, that’s hundreds of dollars per month. That’s money that could have gone to something better. You can make coffee at home for a few cents per cup and tweak it as you like. If you miss the gourmet elements, make your own syrups or whipped cream at home and you’ve got it all for half the price.

Over-the-Top Weddings

Weddings today can cost as much as a small house. There are designer gowns, grand halls and fancy decorations. There is nothing wrong with celebrating–  but tens of thousands of dollars in a day isn’t practical for everyone. In a strong marriage, it is the love and dedication of the partner that counts. A simpler, more intimate celebration can also make beautiful memories without paying the price tag.

Constant Tech Upgrades

New phones and gadgets are released every year, but the improvements are often minor. And yet, many go and snap up the latest version, paying hundreds or thousands of dollars. But their old phones and computers are still great for phone calls, emails and browsing. You can save yourself some money and keep your garbage out of the landfills by waiting until your device actually needs replacement.

Fast Fashion

Trendy clothes may look fun but they often don’t last. Fast fashion pieces are usually cheap and fall apart when washed. You end up buying more and more of them, squandering money and storage space. Rather, buying a few quality pieces that never wear out is money-saving in the long run. These are clothing that does not only last but also looks great year after year.

Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes offer you surprises and convenience, but also stuff you don’t need. From cosmetics to candy, these boxes clutter up your house. Most people only use a few things from each box, so it’s a total waste of money. Rather than paying for blind luck, you can buy exactly what you want in a store for less.

Expensive Gym Memberships

Gyms can cost a lot, especially fancy ones with a lot of perks. Many people pay for memberships they rarely use, so it’s even worse. There are so many easy ways to stay active—whether walking, running or following workout videos at home. If you enjoy the gym, then a cheaper one can do the job without crushing your budget.

Celebrity-Endorsed Products

If a product is marketed by a celebrity, the price will almost always rise. We have to pay extra for the name that goes with it – whether it’s face make up, clothes or even food. Yet these products aren’t always better than regular ones. You can use drugstore makeup, for instance, just as well as the high-end celebrity-type. It’s the brand you’re paying for – not the substance.

Luxury Pet Accessories

Animals don’t care how expensive their things are. Fancy collars, designer suits or hundreds-dollar beds are for people, not for pets. Attention, care and just plain play toys are what pets are after. It costs nothing to comfort them with basic beds, durable toys and nutritious food.
