Whenever you hear “Thomas Jefferson” – you probably imagine the guy who wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was a big supporter of freedom & rights….right? Unfortunately, he also owned hundreds of slaves at his Monticello plantation even though he wrote — “all men are created equal.” It seems like Jefferson didn’t apply those words to everyone on his own estate.

There’s no denying that Christopher Columbus was important to our great nation’s history although there’s a brutal side to his story. His arrival began the severe exploitation & violence against Native American peoples. Essentially, Columbus’s expeditions laid the groundwork for centuries of oppression and it’s hard to reconcile this with the glorified explorer we often picture.

Speaking of Columbus, Queen Isabella of Spain helped fund Columbus’s voyages and she had an equally dark side to her. Her passion led to the Spanish Inquisition, which was a time when Jews & Muslims were either forced to convert to Christianity or leave Spain. With a name like “Ivan the Terrible of Russia,” it shouldn’t be so surprising that he was so horrific. Even though we remember FDR for guiding the US through the Great Depression & World War II, not everything he did was so great. For example, he signed Executive Order 9066 to force 100,000 Japanese Americans into internment camps during the war. They were rounded up & locked away—just because of their heritage.
