In 1518, a whole town in Strasbourg danced non-stop for days—with some people literally dancing themselves to death. No one knows why it happened. Was it mass hysteria or a medical condition? Perhaps it was something in the water? Whatever the cause, the Plague had people dancing until they dropped. It also has had people curious to this day, over 500 years later.

The Great Stink of London

Welcome to London, 1858—also known as “The Great Stink.” The River Thames was so polluted with human waste and industrial runoff that the stench was unbearable. In fact, it forced the government to create the modern sewer system. In a way, the stink helped turn London into a cleaner city so perhaps we should be grateful for the smell because London would be far worse without the sewers!

The Great Molasses Flood

In 1919, Boston experienced a tsunami but instead of water, it was made from molasses! A storage tank burst that released a sticky, 25-foot wave of molasses that destroyed everything in its path. The flood took 21 lives & injured 150 more. It left us with a bizarre tragedy that sounds more like a plot from a cartoon than real life.

The Cadaver Synod

In one of the weirdest moments of papal history, Pope Stephen VI decided it was a good idea to dig up his predecessor, Pope Formosus—and then put his corpse on trial for perjury. Yes, a dead pope was put on trial. This included a deacon speaking on behalf of the corpse! But the weirdest part of the trial was that Pope Formosus was declared guilty and they ruled that his time as Pope was invalid. He was stripped of his papacy!

The Taiping Rebellion’s Heavenly Kingdom

In the mid-19th century, a man named Hong Xiuquan convinced himself and a whole lot of others that he was the brother of Jesus Christ. He led a massive rebellion against the Qing dynasty in China. In the process, he created his own “Heavenly Kingdom.” This uprising later became a full-blown civil war that lasted 14 years—and cost millions of lives. Honestly, it’s heartbreaking that one guy’s beliefs led to so many deaths. Some ideas can be deadly.

The Rain of Fish in Honduras

Every year, the town of Yoro in Honduras experiences a bizarre weather phenomenon where fish rain from the sky. The locals even celebrate this with a festival! It sounds like something out of a fairy tale and scientists think that tornadic waterspouts might be sucking up the fish from bodies of water, then dropping them over the town. Bizarrely, it’s been going on for over 100 years.

The London Beer Flood

In 1814, London was hit by a flood unlike any other—a flood of beer, which happened after vats at the Meux and Company Brewery burst. They released a tidal wave of beer that swept through the streets. It destroyed homes. Worse still, eight people died. As tragic as the event was, you have to admit that it’s also an incredibly strange set of circumstances.

The Zone of Silence

There’s a place in Mexico called the Zone of Silence where radio & satellite signals don’t work at all. Think of it like Mexico’s version of the Bermuda Triangle. The Silence has inspired several stories about meteorite strikes & unexplained phenomena. There might be scientific explanations behind it, like high mineral content but we’re not entirely sure of the cause. Either way, it’s certainly bizarre!

The Kentucky Meat Shower

In 1876, residents of Bath County, Kentucky, watched as chunks of meat started falling from the sky. Yes, meat! There were many theories about it. This includes vultures regurgitating their meals mid-flight & atmospheric conditions carrying the meat from elsewhere. But the true source remains a mystery and thankfully, it hasn’t happened again. Just where did that meat come from?!

The Pepsi Fleet

During the Cold War, Pepsi became the first American consumer product to be sold in the Soviet Union. However, in 1989, Pepsi struck a deal that involved receiving 17 submarines, a cruiser, a frigate & a destroyer in exchange for their cola. This deal made Pepsi temporarily the 6th largest military in the world! They eventually sold the fleet for scrap but it’s still quite a funny story.

The Exploding Whale of Florence, Oregon

In November 1970, a beached whale carcass in Florence, Oregon, became a massive problem due to its size & health hazards. The solution was bizarre—blow it up with half a ton of dynamite. People believed it would disintegrate the whale into small pieces that birds and crabs could clean up. However, the explosion sent chunks of whale flying through the air, damaged property & covered spectators in blubber. How disgusting!
