12 Everyday Sounds That Are Slowly Driving You Crazy (And Why)

You know those days where you’re just minding your own business…and then you hear it. That one sound. It makes you want to cover your ears & run for the hills—agh! Even talking about it makes us feel uncomfortable. So, let’s look at 12 of these everyday sounds.

Everyone knows that even thinking about the sound of nails on a chalkboard is enough to make you cringe. This sound hits the sweet spot of human hearing sensitivity – which is great for detecting danger. However, it’s not so great when it’s just someone’s way of getting attention in a classroom. It makes our skin crawl.

Car Alarms

Being suddenly awoken by a car alarm in the middle of the night is never fun. While the sound is meant to be loud to scare off thieves, when they go off accidentally, they do a great job of scaring us instead. The worst part is when they just. Keep. Going. Honestly we’re seriously considering moving to the woods to live far away from them.

Barking Dogs

Dogs are great. Loyal, friendly—and sometimes way too vocal. A barking dog can go from cute to “please stop” real quick — especially if it’s late at night or early in the morning. Of course it’s not the dog’s fault as they’re just doing their thing. But when you’re trying to sleep & all you can hear is barking – then it’s hard not to feel frustrated.

Snoring

Sharing a bed with a snorer can turn nighttime into a real-life horror movie. Just as you’re about to drift off to sleep, it sounds like someone started a lawnmower next to your ear—but the sound isn’t the worst part. No, it’s how unpredictable the sound is that’s really annoying. Just when you think it’s over and you’re about to fall asleep – it starts up again. Ugh!

Chewing Sounds

Some people have a condition called misophonia that makes the sound of people chewing unbearable. For them, a simple meal can feel like an auditory assault because every bite is amplified—and they can’t focus on anything else. Being in a restaurant is practically a form of torture.

Sirens

Even though the sounds of sirens are a necessary part of life in the city, that doesn’t make them any easier to listen to. It’s especially bad when you’re trying to have a peaceful day & a siren blares past. It’s a wake-up call you never asked for! The sound cuts through anything you’re doing and tends to ruin any idea of relaxation.

Leafblowers

Leafblowers are the enemies of a quiet Saturday morning. You might think you’re able to enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee — but then the whir of a leaf blower shatters the calm. The persistence of the sound is what really gets us because these things can go on for hours. Even the most relaxing day turns into a test of patience.

Fluorescent Lighting

You might not think of fluorescent lights as being noisy but they have a subtle hum that can be surprisingly annoying. It sounds like a mosquito that you can’t swat away because it’s constantly buzzing in the background. It’s even worse in places like offices or schools. Why? Because these lights are common in these places.

Keyboard Typing

Since open offices are so popular these days, the sound of typing has become the soundtrack to our workdays. But there’s always that one person who types like they’re having an angry conversation with someone. It’s a constant clack-clack-clack that invades your space. Honestly – it’s enough to make you want to quit.

Construction Noise

Construction is a sign of progress but it’s also a source of relentless noise. It doesn’t matter if it’s the beep of trucks backing up or the clatter of machinery—these sounds are anything but music to our ears. Hearing them day in, day out can make even the most productive of us feel like we’re taking a lesson in anger management.

Crying Babies

The sound of a crying baby is hardwired to get our attention. It’s a survival mechanism and it’s pretty great for making sure babies get the care they need—but it’s pretty hard on our nerves. No matter where you are – a crying baby can be a test of patience even though it’s not the baby’s fault.

Public Transportation Announcements

Public transportation is a great way to get around – although the constant announcements can be a bit much. It feels like a contest of how many times they can remind you of the next stop! The repetition & volume make it hard to relax or even think — which is enough to turn your commute into an endless loop of information you were already aware of.
