8 Dollar Store Items To Avoid at All Costs

Saving money when you shop at dollar stores might be easy, but not everything you see on the shelves is the best deal you’ll find. Some of the cheap items in these stores might be cheap for a reason – so cheap that a dollar more for another item on the shelf can actually save you more money in the long run.

Lots of products at dollar stores don’t fly off the shelves because they have to deal with some poor quality or safety issues or durability concerns. Here are eight items you may want to leave at the dollar store — If you inadvertently purchase these items, you might save a few bucks initially, but down the road, you’ll no doubt have some buyer’s remorse.

Batteries

It’s probably not worth it to buy batteries at a dollar store, since the cheaper brands don’t last as long as pricier brands. Repeated battery replacements – sooner than you’d expect – can be frustrating and even more costly in the long run. There’s also a higher risk that they’ll start leaking or not operating properly, which can harm your device.

Over-the-Counter Medications

It may not be wise to get generic medicines from a dollar store. The drugs you purchase might not be efficient, as some of the drugs may not be produced by a reputable company and might fail to meet the same high standard as some big brand names. Moreover, some drugs may be closer to their expiry dates versus popular pharmacies. So, it is better to spend a couple more bucks and get your drugs from a trusted source.

Electronics

The electronics products at dollar stores don’t often deliver on their promises. Things like chargers, headphones or other little gadgets might not perform according to expectations – or they could cease functioning after you’ve purchased them. At worst, they could present safety risks (for example, by overheating and shorting out electrical work). Cheap electronics could cost more in the long run, if they fail and end up requiring frequent replacement.

Personal Care Products

As I have learned from painful experience, personal care products at the dollar store are a crapshoot. Dollar-store alternatives to shampoos, lotions and dental care products might not have the efficacy you expect – certainly less than your ‘name-brand’ products. They might be a recipe for itchy irritated skin, bad smells, harmful ingredients, etc.

Cleaning Supplies

Be wary of dollar store cleaners. You can’t always rely on dollar store cleaners to clean well. Dollar store cleaners could have nasty chemicals in them or be too strong. Just as bad, a dollar store cleaner might actually be less powerful than name brand cleaners – and therefore, less able to eliminate stains and grime. Quantity of the product is usually much less than other stores as well.

Toys

Toys available at dollar stores will also seem too inexpensive to resist. However, these toys will fall way short in terms of safety standards, which may prove dangerous for children. Besides the possibility of the toys being easily breakable and creating wide threats such as asphyxiation in children, the material quality of dollar toys might not be safe or non-toxic.

Cookware and Utensils

Poor-quality cookware and utensils are likely to be more fragile and less safe than name brands – cheaper knives may not stay sharp for long, for instance. Pots or pans may warp or heat unevenly in the kitchen, cheaper non-stick coatings may be less safe due to higher amounts of harmful chemicals, etc. You’re likely to spend less time and money in the long run if you invest in better tools for your kitchen.

Food Products

When it comes to the food items at a dollar store, you’re playing a sort of Roulette wheel. SOME of the products are better than others. Go for name-brand items if you must buy food here. When it comes to the food items, you’re always better off going for quality and freshness with a known company, so you know they’re providing you with the highest grade of product. In all cases, you’re likely to find smaller volume or quantity of food for the lower price.
