When Dinner Becomes a Lesson
For one dad, a simple restaurant rule turned into a parenting debate.
His 12-year-old son loves ordering the most adventurous thing on the menu — even though he often doesn’t like what he picks. The pattern? One bite… then a request to swap plates.
This time, dad said no.
The Standoff
Dad ordered chicken. His son chose fish soup.
When the soup didn’t work out, he asked for some chicken instead. His father refused, reminding him he had warned him before ordering: choose carefully.
At home later, the boy made a sandwich and accused his dad of “starving” him. His wife thought he’d been too harsh.
So he asked the internet.
The Internet Responds
Many backed him.
“You were very clear before your son ordered about the consequences… It sounds like a good life lesson.”
Another added:
“He’s old enough to understand that choices have consequences.”
But not everyone agreed.
“What is his goal with this?” one commenter asked. “Does he genuinely want to try new things?”
Others suggested compromise.
“Start taking him to buffets… It’s great to be adventurous, but not at the cost of a wasted meal.”
And one offered this:
“He’s old enough to tell the server, ‘Can I try a small portion?’”
The Real Question
Was this about fish soup — or responsibility?
At 12, should kids face the full consequences of their choices?
Or should curiosity come with a safety net?
