While most people think of retirement with a sense of relief & anticipation, not everyone’s dreaming the same dream. Plenty of people avoid retiring altogether for one reason or another. Some of them you might agree with—others are just plain odd! Here are twelve controversial reasons why some people choose to keep on working, even when society says it’s time to wind down.

Belief in Work as Life Extension

Some people swear that staying on the job keeps them young at heart—and even healthier. They believe that the mental & physical activity that comes with working will grant them longevity. While the majority see retirement as a well-earned break after working our entire lives, these people see it completely differently. Really, they can’t think of anything worse than pressing pause.
Rejecting Societal Norms

Other people believe retirement is another box society tries to fit everyone into. They question why everyone’s expected to stop working and start relaxing at a particular age. Surely it should be a choice for everyone? They disagree with retiring because “it’s time” and would prefer to do so when they’re ready—if they retire at all. It’s completely up in the air!

Investing in High-Risk Ventures

Pouring your life savings into a startup or the stock market in the hopes of a big payoff is not for the light-hearted. But some people do it! It definitely bucks the trend of playing it safe in your golden years because there are so many risks in doing so. Yet the adrenaline rush and the possibility of striking it big keep some people clocking in well past retirement age.
Pursuing Power and Influence

Power and influence are like a drug for some so the thought of giving that up is downright unpalatable. They relish being in the thick of things & making decisions. For them, the idea of stepping back to hand over the reins is entirely unappealing. They prioritize power over kicking back with a good book. Why spend time with the grandkids when you could be delegating others instead?
Fear of Technological Redundancy

These days, technology changes at the speed of light & many people fear that stepping away from work will make them obsolete. They worry that retirement means getting left behind, unable to keep up with the latest technology. Instead, they keep working so that they can stay ahead of the game—and relevant.
Addiction to Success

You can’t deny that scoring deals and surpassing targets comes with a thrill. For the success addicts, work is where they get their fix of glory—they’re intoxicated by the recognition & achievements. The thought of trading all that for leisurely afternoons and hobby classes is hardly tempting.
Skepticism About Retirement Fulfillment

Some people look at retirement and are terrified of what they see as a yawning gap of boredom ahead. They can’t imagine filling their days without the structure and purpose of work. Of course, it’s taboo to say out loud—but they secretly worry retirement feels like a letdown as opposed to a reward.
Environmental and Societal Impact

Many older people are driven by a desire to make the world a better place so retirement symbolizes putting the brakes on their impact. And they’re not ready for that! They see their work as very important for the environment—they’re not keen on stepping aside. Lounging around while there’s still work to be done is horrifying to them.
Distrust in Financial Institutions

After watching economies tumble and financial systems falter, it’s no wonder some people don’t trust their retirement funds. It’s not that they don’t want to retire, it’s just that they’d rather keep earning and managing their money on their terms. They’re highly skeptical of any promises about secure & prosperous retirements.
Pursuit of Perpetual Growth

In some cases, people see life as centered around constant growth & learning. As such, they view retirement as the end of the road for personal and professional development—being able to continually evolve & learn new skills gets them out of bed in the morning. The prospect of free time is a nightmare.
Legacy Building

Then there are those for whom work is a way to create something that lasts, a kind of legacy that will outlive them. It doesn’t matter if it’s a business or a body of artistic work—the idea of stopping before they’re done is unthinkable. In their eyes, retiring puts an untimely full stop on their life’s work.
Fear of Intimacy and Family Dynamics

Work is also a paradise for those who dread the thought of spending more time at home. They don’t want to deal with difficult family relationships or face issues they’ve swept under the carpet over the years. Instead, the office is a convenient escape. It makes the idea of retirement less than attractive.
