10 Beliefs That Hold People Back For Decades

Some beliefs don’t ruin your life all at once, and they just stall it without you realizing it. They’re the kind of thoughts that seem harmless, or even smart, but actually keep you from improving yourself. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel stuck, it might be because you have some of these ten beliefs holding you back.

Do any of these sound familiar to you? Tell us in the comments.

“If I Can’t Do It All, I Won’t Do Any Of It”

People with this belief usually end up doing absolutely nothing. They set a huge, unrealistic goal, and when they can’t go full-throttle right away, they quit, since they believe that not doing it all is a sign of failure. But this all-or-nothing approach is exhausting, especially since you don’t need a clean slate. You just need a smaller brush.

“It’s Not Worth Doing Unless I Can Do It Perfectly”

Lots of us have scrapped plans because they weren’t going to be exactly how we imagined, but that’s not good. It makes you treat life like it’s something to be assessed on, which it really isn’t. Rather than doing the thing a little bit badly and learning from it, people with this belief do nothing. Because if it’s not perfect, what’s the point?

“If I Wait A Little Longer, I’ll Be More Ready”

There’s always a reason to wait a little longer, and you tell yourself you need some more confidence or experience to do the thing you really want to do. But the next thing you know, it’s been three years and you’re still stuck at that “almost ready” stage. You’re waiting for certainty that’s never going to show up.

“That’s Just How I Am”

Claiming that you’ve “always been this way” may sound like self-awareness, but it’s usually just an excuse to stop working on yourself. It doesn’t matter that you think you’re “bad with people” or “not a creative person.” Really, what you’re saying is that you’ve decided not to change because it’s easier to stick to the script than to rewrite it.

“Other People Are Just Better At This”

Saying this sentence will kill your dreams, and it’s relatively easy to do. You see someone doing what you want to do and think to yourself that they can do it, but you can’t. However, the truth is that you don’t see them spending years making mistakes and second-guessing themselves. You’re never a witness to them figuring out how to do things in the middle of a breakdown.

“If I Work Harder, Everything Will Eventually Pay Off”

The idea of continuing to grind until the day all the effort will magically turn into success sounds rather normal. But effort without direction will get you nowhere. In fact, this belief convinces people to ignore the importance of strategy and relationships. They forget about timing and how it moves the needle because they’re too busy being “busy.”

“I Missed My Chance So It’s Too Late Now”

You’ll hear people in their 30s and 60s saying this, as they’ve convinced themselves that the window of opportunity has slammed shut. They believe they didn’t act fast enough, and they think there’s a set schedule to stick to. However, most of the time, nobody’s keeping score but you, and starting late still beats not starting. Don’t let your age hold you back.

“I’m The Only One Who Can Do This Right”

Everybody knows someone who won’t let go of anything because no one else does it “right,” and that’s a recipe for burnout. It makes people control every detail, and then they start to wonder why they’re so tired. Yet the fact is that other people can do it, just not your way. And that’s okay.

“If I Stop Being Useful, People Will Leave Me”

The people who say yes to everything and never ask for help are usually the ones who also feel guilty resting. Somewhere along the way, they began thinking that their worth is in what they do for others, so they hustle for approval and call it kindness. But that makes them drained, which makes it harder to progress.

People love to say that they’ll start working on themselves after things stop being so busy. But weeks turn into months, and somehow everything’s still chaotic, which is because life never really relaxes. Instead, it swaps one kind of chaos for another, so you’ll never reach that peace and quiet to start something. Waiting for it means you’ll put that thing off forever.
