10 American Icons Who Are Controversial Figures Abroad

While most American icons are almost like stars in the sky, they twinkle a bit differently depending on where you’re standing. In America, we cheer & applaud these personalities—but people in other corners of the world feel rather differently. Let’s look at ten American icons who have created controversy outside of the USA. There’s no right or wrong—instead, just different ways of interpreting the same actions.

Jerry Springer

Jerry Springer is a household name in America, thanks to his TV show. But things got heated when he took that across the pond to the UK where people didn’t see it as another daytime TV distraction. Instead, it led to debates about whether this kind of entertainment actually crossed a line and how much of it was actually exploitation.

Howard Stern

Howard Stern, the self-proclaimed “King of All Media,” has a way of pushing buttons & boundaries with his words. In America, we can’t get enough of his shock jock antics—but it was a different story when his show hit the airwaves in Canada. The Canadians weren’t laughing. Many of them were offended enough by his material to pull the plug on his broadcasting there.

Paris Hilton sure knows how to keep the paparazzi busy—but it was her off-screen actions (specifically her drug charges) that caught attention in Japan. Unlike in the US, where her escapades were just another tabloid headline, Japan took things seriously. They took it seriously, in fact, that they denied her entry into the country.

Dan Brown

Dan Brown is great at making historical mysteries into page-turning novels. While many people celebrate his storytelling in America, the reception wasn’t as warm in some parts of the world. For example, in Lebanon, his book was banned for its portrayal of religious history. Jordan & Egypt also banned the film adaptation for similar reasons.

Richard Gere

Even though he’s a beloved actor, Richard Gere, also has a passion for activism—especially with Tibet. American audiences admired his dedication to the cause yet China wasn’t on the same page and he became persona non grata. He is currently banned from entering China, with no signs of this ban lifting anytime soon.

Katy Perry

It’s hard to deny that Katy Perry lights up the stage with her performances, although one of her gigs wasn’t seen so positively in China. During a performance in Taiwan, she wore a dress adorned with sunflowers – an anti China symbol there. The Chinese government saw this as a political statement and thus banned her from performing there.

Brad Pitt

Similarly, Brad Pitt’s role in “Seven Years in Tibet” made him much less popular in China than in America. The film shows Chinese involvement in Tibet in a rather negative light, leading to Pitt being banned from entering China. The ban was only lifted in 2014—a full 17 years after the film was released.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is well-known for pushing the envelope with her performances—but she pushed it a little too far during a performance in Mexico. During a concert, she did a stunt involving the Mexican flag and many locals saw it as disrespectful. She faced widespread criticism from Mexican officials and potential fines of up to $1,200.

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson is no stranger to controversy—but it was his criminal record that led to him being denied entry visas in the UK and other countries. His battles in & out of the ring are well-known in the USA, of course. Yet the international response to his legal troubles shows that not all countries see redemption in the same way.

Snoop Dogg

During a visit to Norway in 2012, he was caught with marijuana. While that might not shock everybody in the USA, Norwegian law is far stricter and they fined him around $10,000 (adjusted for inflation). Worse still, he was banned from entering the country for two years! This followed him being detained the previous year for having too much cash.
