After 60, Some Popular Events Just Lost Their Appeal for Me

Turning 60 has been quite the adventure because it’s given me a fresh take on how I want to spend my time. My preferences for everything have changed—and that includes events I never used to miss. They’re just not worth it anymore! So, here are ten events I’ve started skipping and why it might be a good idea for you to do the same.

All-Night Music Festivals

While there’s something magical about live music under the open sky, all-night music festivals are a young person’s game. My back screams just thinking about those endless hours on my feet! As such, I’ve hung up my festival boots in favor of catching live streams or hitting up daytime gigs where I can enjoy the tunes & still be in bed by ten.

Rock Concerts in Large Venues

Speaking of music, I love rock concerts but I don’t enjoy them like I used to. The decibel levels & the jostling crowds make it hard to really savor the music so I now opt for shows at smaller venues. At least then, I can appreciate the band up close without having to deal with the frenzy of so many people.

Black Friday Shopping

I used to participate in the Black Friday madness with all the gusto of a bargain hunter but let’s be real—it’s just crazy consumerism. Instead, I skip the lines and shop for online deals while sipping coffee in my pajamas. It’s shopping made simple, with all the deals & none of the elbowing.

Marathon Running

Marathons were my badge of honor, pushing my limits mile after mile. But now, my knees aren’t as enthusiastic about hitting the pavement as they used to be! I’ve traded the race bib for leisurely walks in the park since they’re just as refreshing—and a whole lot kinder to my aging joints.

Political Rallies

Of course politics matters and I used to be right there in the thick of rallies. However, hours of standing & shouting while dealing with the crowd? That’s a bit too much for me now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still making my voice heard but I prefer to do it in ways that don’t involve yelling over a sea of heads.

Mardi Gras Celebrations

The bead-throwing, the music, the parties—there’s no denying that it’s exciting. Yet Mardi Gras also involves gigantic crowds & non-stop action that are more than I want to handle nowadays. I’ve put away my parade gear in favor of quieter celebrations where I can enjoy the spirit without being overwhelmed.

New Year’s Eve at Times Square

Everyone should see the ball drop at least once but once was enough for me. The cold & the crowds have lost their appeal—and let’s not forget standing for hours! Now, I like ringing in the New Year with a glass of something good, surrounded by friends & family in a far cozier living room.

Thanksgiving Day Parades

There’s nothing like a Thanksgiving parade to kick off the holiday season but standing in the cold just to catch a glimpse of a float? No, thank you. Instead, I’ve found a new tradition that involves watching it live on TV from my warm & comfy couch with a hot cup of cocoa in my hand.

Cinco de Mayo Street Fairs

I used to love all the colors & music of Cinco de Mayo street fairs—not to mention the delicious tacos. But now, walking through packed streets and standing in long lines for food just isn’t worth the hassle. I’d rather host a small fiesta at home with friends. At least then, we can enjoy good food & company relatively easily.

Annual State Fairs

The state fair used to be a highlight of my year with its endless food stalls & quirky exhibits. Let’s face it, though—everything seems overpriced, from parking to a slice of pie. I now skip the fair and visit local artisan markets or food festivals instead where I can enjoy the experience for a much better price.
