9 signs to pause before getting a pet

Who doesn’t love to see a furry friend running and playing all around the house every day? You might love the idea of having a pet by your side, but the question is, “can you really have one at home?”

Most of us love pets, but unfortunately, some of us are unable to live with one. You might be allergic to dog fur or maybe the medical costs are too much for you. Reasons like this can shatter your dream of living with a pet.

Let’s look at 9 reasons why you can’t have a pet right now.

Lack of Time

A pet is definitely going to take a lot of your time. Every day you need to prepare meals, take them for a walk and spend time with your pet so they won’t feel lonely. And with time, as your pet ages, you will have to stay home and help your pet whenever they are sick or needs your assistance.

Sometimes you will have to avoid going out with your friends & skip family gatherings. These commitments come with having a pet. If you feel like you can’t do it, it is better to forget the idea of bringing a pet home.

Financial Constraints

When you have a pet, you need to buy food and pay for vaccinations. And going on, you need to cover grooming services and veterinary care. If your pet unfortunately falls seriously sick, you will have to pay for these unexpected medical costs. It is going to be a considerable amount of money. If you are already behind on your bills, adopting a pet doesn’t seem like a wise idea.

Unstable Living Situation

If you are living in a rented house and your landlord does not permit pets inside, you won’t be able to consider having a pet. And even if you find a pet-friendly housing, that can cost you extra money. If you are planning to shift places from time to time, moving with a pet can be an extra burden to you.

Lack of Knowledge

Taking care of a pet is not easy. You need to have good knowledge of many things; food habits, diseases your pet can get, exercise needs, when you should take them to the vet etc. You also have to know how to train your pet to obey your commands. If you especially lack basic knowledge of training a pet, it’s better to get updated before trying to adopt one.

Lifestyle Incompatibility

If you often travel long distances due to work or if you are addicted to spending most of your free time with friends hanging out, then having a pet won’t be an ideal choice for you. Even though you love pets, if your lifestyle is filled with work and family commitments, a pet won’t fit in.

Allergies and Sensitivities

If you or one of your family members has pet allergies like itchy eyes, sneezing, breathing problem, you should probably rethink having a pet. Even these mild allergies can turn into serious health issues when you are frequently exposed to pets (especially their fur).

Inability to Commit to Training

When you adopt a pet, you need to train them to behave properly, to follow your commands, and to socialize with people. However, this training is not a one or two weeks process; it may take months or perhaps a year. So, if you are unable to keep up with the constant training process, do not proceed with adoption.

Emotional Readiness

Taking care of a pet does not only mean nurturing them and looking after their medical needs. A pet expects you to love them and they share an emotional bond with you. When you are stressed and sad, your pet feels it.

If you are someone who is always stressed due to work or family issues, rethink adopting. It won’t be fair for your pet to be with someone who is too busy to see their emotions; pets also feel sad, get afraid, and get stressed. And when they do, they rely on you for the comfort they need.

Ignoring the Adoption Process

If you want a pet, you need to understand the process of adoption clearly. If not, it is going to affect the pet in a harmful manner. For instance, if you live in a small apartment, adopting a large dog won’t be suitable, as you won’t be able to provide the pet with enough space and exercise. So, research and decide carefully which pet suits your life best.
