It’s not like Americans have suddenly stopped believing in God or praying, but they have stopped treating the church like it’s the only place for them to do that.
A screen fits the moment

Some people want only one answer or one verse, maybe one calm voice. They don’t want to deal with a whole church service during those situations. No, they’d rather look for what they need online and find a video or podcast that fits their needs.
They’ve decided to take religion out of the church building and put it somewhere more portable. Listening to a sermon while you’re making dinner? It’s a lot more common than you might think.Â
The room got too noisy

Politics has a way of becoming part of the church, even when nobody’s explicitly telling you to vote for a certain person. The jokes, the comments in the hallway, the prayer requests, it’s all too much for some people.
They don’t want to talk about ballots when they should be praying. So, instead, they’d rather keep their faith in their homes and avoid going to church at all. They prefer it to be a private affair.
The hurt had a face

You might blame church doctrine for a lot of these problems. That’s the case sometimes, sure, but on other occasions, it’s the fact that people get ignored or gossiped about that matters. Let’s not forget how leadership scandals are part of the reason, too.
The truth is, many Americans don’t have a problem with prayer, but they do have a problem with the people they’re praying with. They choose to leave it all behind and pray at home instead.
One voice isn’t enough anymore

In the past, you’d have one pastor who told you everything about faith, and that was that. Not anymore, though. You can hear what a Baptist has to say and a Catholic’s opinion on the matter, along with a Jewish interpretation.
You can do it all from the comfort of your home. It’s not like you’ve got to stay in church and listen to one pastor’s point of view anymore, as you can hear what other voices have to say. It’s not always simple. But it sure is interesting.Â
Questions need air

Hard answers are one thing. Being treated like a problem for asking a hard question is another. Unfortunately, many Americans feel like they’re not able to ask the things they want in church, so they decide to stop going.
They want to be able to have serious intellectual discussions. They want to be able to ask the burning questions. But if the church doesn’t let them do that, then they’ll keep believing, just in a place that’s not so restrictive.
The passing plate gets old

It’s strange how money has become so central to church conversations. Any time you go, you’ll probably get asked to contribute a little for the roof repair and youth trips, don’t forget the tithing, too. Some people are done with all of that.
They want religion to be about God, nothing more, nothing less. That doesn’t mean they’ll stop donating to help out, but they’ll do it when it suits them. Is that really so bad?
Smaller feels calmer

You hear ‘Christian community.’ You probably picture a full church. However, other people see it differently, and they’d prefer their local religious community to be smaller. Maybe a couple of friends, maybe a couple of strangers.
They don’t want to be stuck in one building with a hundred people because, really, they feel just as spiritual when there are only a few of them. They feel more connected with a smaller crowd, too.
The stage can feel distracting

You’ll notice a few things in some churches. They’ve got a soundboard and lights, along with video screens showing every part of the sermon. It’s a bit much. Some people think that churches have become too focused on performance and not enough on praying.
They’d rather keep God in their homes because it’s way more low-key. There’s none of the performance and none of the staging, for starters. Just you, God, and the Good Book. It doesn’t get better than that.
The weekly box doesn’t fit

God doesn’t need a lobby. God doesn’t need a bulletin, either. That’s what some Americans are starting to believe, and they’re now praying while driving and speaking to God before they go to bed.
They don’t think they need to go to church every week to have a direct relationship with God anymore. They can do it from home instead, and that doesn’t affect their connection to Him in any way.
