6 Everyday American Foods That Were Invented by Accident

Some of America’s favorite foods weren’t carefully planned recipes. They happened because someone made a mistake, ran out of ingredients, or simply got lucky.

1. Potato Chips Started as an Act of Revenge

In 1853, chef George Crum became frustrated with a customer who kept sending back his fried potatoes for being too thick. Crum sliced them paper-thin, fried them until they were hard and salty, and expected another complaint. Instead, the customer loved them and potato chips were born.

2. Popsicles Were Invented by an 11-Year-Old

In 1905, Frank Epperson accidentally left a cup of powdered soda mix outside overnight with a stirring stick still inside. The drink froze, and the Popsicle was created by mistake.

3. Chocolate Chip Cookies Were Never Supposed to Exist

Ruth Wakefield was baking cookies in the 1930s when she ran out of baker’s chocolate and substituted chopped chocolate pieces instead. She expected them to melt into the dough. They didn’t — and one of America’s favorite desserts was created.

4. Corn Flakes Came From Forgotten Grain

The Kellogg brothers accidentally left cooked wheat sitting out too long. Rather than throw it away, they rolled it into flakes and toasted it, creating the cereal that eventually became Corn Flakes.

5. Worcestershire Sauce Improved by Being Forgotten

The original recipe was considered a failure and stored away in a cellar. When the barrels were rediscovered months later, the aging process had transformed the mixture into the famous sauce known today.

6. Ice Cream Cones Solved a Supply Problem

At the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, an ice cream vendor reportedly ran out of bowls. A neighboring waffle seller rolled his waffles into cones, creating a solution that quickly became standard everywhere.
