1. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
In 1911, a fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City, killing 146 garment workers.
Many exit doors had been locked, trapping employees inside. Public outrage led to sweeping workplace reforms, including stricter fire codes, emergency exits, and factory inspections that influenced labor laws across the United States.
2. The Johnstown Flood
When the South Fork Dam failed in Pennsylvania in 1889, more than 2,200 people lost their lives.
The disaster highlighted the dangers of poorly maintained infrastructure and influenced later engineering standards for dams and flood-control systems throughout the country.
3. The Coconut Grove Fire
A nightclub fire in Boston in 1942 killed 492 people, making it one of the deadliest nightclub disasters in history.

6. The Hyatt Regency Walkway Collapse
In 1981, suspended walkways inside Kansas City’s Hyatt Regency hotel collapsed during a crowded event, killing 114 people.
