Originally known as the Sears Tower, Chicago’s Willis Tower became the world’s tallest building when it opened in 1973.
Its innovative bundled-tube structural design allowed engineers to build higher while using less steel than traditional skyscraper designs.
5. Gateway Arch
The Gateway Arch in St. Louis remains the tallest monument in the United States.
Standing 630 feet tall, its stainless-steel catenary curve required engineering techniques that had never been used on such a large scale.
