14 school events that used to be a big deal

Not too long ago, certain school events felt like the Super Bowl of childhood. Kids would plan for weeks for these events, count down the days, and talk about them forever afterward. But these days? Most of those big-deal moments just don’t hit the same. So here are 14 school events that were once legendary and now barely make a ripple.

The school talent show

You could sing, dance, do magic, comedy or anything else at the school talent show to wow the crowd. But now, many schools don’t conduct talent shows at all. Or it’s an event with only a handful of participants and an audience of parents.

Book fair week

Running your hands along the rows of shiny new hardcovers and getting cool erasers and bookmarks was such a treat. But with schools moving to online reading programs, book fairs are rare.

This used to be a big production. Kids made sure their hair was perfect, wore their best clothes, and had no stained shirts. Now it’s a quick snap, and lots of kids don’t even care if they blink. Photos aren’t a big deal with everyone on instagram.

Field day

Playing outside games with a mix of friendly competition, outdoor snacks, and chants for your class was super fun. Today, many schools have made it more sedate or nixed it altogether due to scheduling or liability rules.

Assemblies in the auditorium

A lot of times, this meant a break from class. Sometimes, the announcement or speaker was boring. Sometimes there was a special treat. These days, there’s more of a chance you’ll be watching from your computer.

Spirit week

Pajama Day, Twin Day, Crazy Hair Day, etc., are all silly, fun times to dress up and have fun. Today, Spirit Week is either half-heartedly promoted, or the students feel “too cool” to dress up.

Holiday concerts or plays

Singing songs or a short skit on a stage in front of family used to be a seasonal rite. School holiday programs and concerts have faded away due to time, budget, or efforts to be more inclusive and neutral.

Career day with parents

Kids used to love it when it was a parent’s turn to come in costume and be the firefighter or wear a lab coat and talk about their work. Today, most schools handle career prep with online modules or professional development panels.

Firefighter or police visits

Kids got a kick out of seeing firetrucks and being able to try on a helmet. Not as many schools host these kinds of engaging safety lessons and fun visits.

Class pen pals

Getting letters from another kid in your school, or better yet, another country, was so exciting. Pen pal programs used to be all the rage. Today, they’ve mostly disappeared in favor of email, if they even exist at all.

Reading buddy time

Older kids reading with younger students or going to another class made all the kids feel special. There are fewer of these sweet moments as many schools put more emphasis on testing and time efficiency.

Locker decorating

Birthday? Big game? Your friends would put streamers, balloons, and posters all over your locker. A lot of schools these days don’t even assign lockers anymore, and if they do, no one uses them.

Raffle drawings or prize boxes

Teachers used to pull names from a box to choose someone for a chance to win. Or, they handed out little silly prizes from a classroom treasure chest. Tighter budgets and stricter school policies have mostly ended these tiny teachable moments.

Yearbook signing

Racing to get all your friends to sign your yearbook after picking it up and before the end of the year was a satisfying finale to the school year. Today, many schools don’t print yearbooks or the kids don’t want one even if their school prints it.
